"Squash" photo album (or unique photo idea needed)

A while ago, DH and I were given a "squash photo album" as a thank you gift. It is hard to describe but I will try. It is about 4" x 4", tied with a ribbon, when folded or "squashed." When you open it, it stretches out to be about 18" of a variety of 16 photos cut into triangles and squares. It seems like the photos are glued onto heavy paper (possibly oaktag), and also some scrap book paper. Then, it all folds (squashes) back into the neat little square.

I don't think it would be too difficult to make IF I knew the secret to making it. I just can't quite figure it out though. We just spent Thanksgiving at WDW with DH's family, and I thought it would be a nice little gift to make for each of them.

Anyone have any idea of what I am talking about and how to make it? I know the person that gave to us called it a squash album, but when I searched it, of course I got lots of info about the veggie, squash!

we call those expolding books at my house.. MY DD makes them -- I will ask her for the directions.. Michelle

i know DIY had them on thier show once - maybe if you go to the DIY site and look under the scrapbooking show and then searched the books you will find directions.
