Has anyone else done this? We literally just decided to take a trip to Disney World 2 1/2 weeks from now. Only bad thing is almost no availability. So that leaves us with the Shades of Green standby. Just curious if there are any other Disney fanatics that have done this. We will also be driving from NY with 3 toddlers ages 3 and under! We were really hoping to sneak into AKL, but no dice there. But I'm still pretty happy my DW was on board with it.

Are you trying to stay on points? If so, keep checking availability on the members site, you may pick up a day here and there last minute. People cancel all the time.

Have fun on your trip!

Last minute trips are the bomb!
You do not have time to plan every last thing to be done and are more of a go with the flow type of trip.
DW and I several times have been at DTD for the day and decided we wanted to stay the night. Called the resorts directly (back before MS was open on Sundays) or MS and checked in within 15 minutes.
At MK for the day in Feb ’14 for our anniversary, called MS @09:00, and booked a room at BLT for that night. Checked-in @11:00 and the room was ready. We did not plan on this day going like this until @05:00 while still in bed.

It can certainly be done with some creativity and spare time spent on it. All of our trips are planned at under the 60 day mark with most being under the 30 day mark.

I wouldn't recommend it for those that cannot be creative and use some magic of their own to get the most out of their vacation.

I planned our 11/14-11/24 vacation starting on 10/20 and I have all the dining reservations - Ohana, California Grill, fireworks times for La Hacienda AND Rose & Crown for different nights, Be our guest lunch, be our guest dinner, and everything else we wanted. For Fastpass plus, I resigned myself to the fact that I wasn't going to get the 7 dwarfs, but that opened up, so I lucked out and got two of them for our party of three.

Much to the chagrin of many here, I use scripts/macros to secure all of my dining reservations, they run for days before being able to secure my timeframe, so that is a necessity for me to get my many popular dining choices.

I don't do 180 windows. My computer is here to do my menial task bidding, until AI advances, and we become the minions. :)

Yes, we've taken quite a few spur of the moment trips, most recently this July to see Frozen's fireworks and do the Dessert Party. I am so glad DH enjoys our WDW vacations as much as I do...

Yes. A few years ago we booked on a Tues to go for Epcot's 25th that week. This past Aug we booked on Thur morning to check in on Sat for the Villains Unleashed.

My favorite spur of the moment trip was Jan. 13,it was marathon weekend and we were in New Orleans where the weather was cold and wet with no sign of letting up.I called MS that sat.morning OKW had a studio available .We rented a car ,drove over and enjoyed 3 days of spectacular weather.Had to stop at a store on the way to pick up swim suits.:cool1:

The Resort Availability Tool (aka the RAT, LOL) is very helpful when you are trying to do a last minute trip. (After you click on the link I provided, you'll be prompted to log in to the DVC Member website and then you will be brought right to the tool).

My advice is to make a back up cash reservation somewhere that can be cancelled without penalty and then check the RAT as often as you can. You can also try calling MS, especially when you get within a week. Sometimes they can find availability for you when the website is showing nothing.

Good luck!

Good luck w the drive! Just try to do most of it at night while the kids are sleeping. Harder on you and the other half but will save a lot of time not having to make so many diaper and food stops. I drove straight thru from MD last winter w a 4 month old and got to ssr at 4:30am lol.
As for last minute trips...I'm hoping to book something this weekend for mymy birthday and fly down. I know probably impossible w f&w and the race, but one can dream!
