We leave tomorrow and last nite my niece (14) sprained her knee. It was really swollen. I'm now worrying that she won't be able to walk very much at WDW>
I tore a ligament in my knee days before my very first trip to Disney World! I took as many ibuprofen as I could tolerate to ease the pain, and had it wrapped. I couldn't afford to cancel the trip. It hurt but I dragged around for a week, the experience was still awesome. I did not use a wheelchair. I was a lot older so your neice will handle a simple sprain easily. Bring an icepack! Pinkbounc
I've gone too with a knee injury. I was in a knee immobilizer which in September was still hot and uncomfortable I didn't use a whhelchair either, but that hot tub sure came in handy!
I just went in October with a knee/leg injury that occurred last May (also happened in FL). I rented a motorized scooter because we were with a large group and I didn't want to hold anyone up. The scooter's don't go very fast, but at the time it was faster than I could go on my own power. I'd park the scooter in whatever section of the park we were in and walk around until we went to another part of the park. I've been in PT for months - still recovering. I agree with what everyone else has said - lots of ice and a wheelchair/scooter would be the way to go.
I just wanted to mention that WDW parks and the outside rental places will not rent the motorized scooters (ecvs) for use by anyone under 18, so plan to get a wheelchair if she needs one.
If you come to the disABILITIES Board, the disABILITIES FAQs has info about all the different ways to get wheelchairs - from borrowing one from your WDW resort to renting from an outside medical supply place.
Also, if she needs ice, you can get it from any of the vendors that sell pop in cups (not usually the cart vendors). You can also go to First Aid in any of the parks.
I'd recommend a wheel chair. My husband injured his foot a week before we went to WDW last year. It was really easy pushing him around and it was great having a lap to hold the backpacks!!
