Just noticed this was on tonight - I missed it :(

I hadn't even seen it advertised on BBC. :sad1:

I knew it was on, but for the first time in a lot of years I actually missed it :(

DW and myself have been busy on a little christmas tour of our families homes today dropping off presents, drinking cups of tea and visiting the bathroom (due to all the cups of tea):teeth:

We got home in time to see Kelly Holmes win it, and she was a deserved winner this year. I did feel a little disappointed that Matthew Pinsent didn't get it though as he has performed somewhat in the shadow of Steve Redgrave for the three Olympics prior to this one and I really don't think that Steve would have had so much success without Pinsents raw power in the boat with him.

Shame you missed it - there was a lot of +ve stuff to celebrate this year. Don't get me wrong but the years where they have non-footballers taking penalties or non-rowers on rowing machines although entertaining you know it's just to fill time as they is little to talk about!

I think it's a total travesty when someone like James Toseland competes in a demanding sport like World Superbikes for several months of the year, culminating in a World Championship title for British sport (yet again!) and he hardly warrants a mention!! Meanwhile we have a couple of athletes who, at best, are in the public eye for two, maybe three weeks at most, and one of them gets Sports Personality Of The Year!! Could someone please tell me where they go when there are no Olympics on?? Seems to me the voting public or whoever is responsible for these results wouldn't know a real sporting achievement if it jumped up and bit them where it hurts!! There!! Rant over!!

Probably doing the hours and hours of exhausting training, 7 days a week, 52 weeks at year that are required to reach not only the standard to represent Great Britain at the Olympics, but to win a gold medal! There are also numerous 'lesser' events that take place all year round in athletics (and I'm sure in rowing as well) that are not covered on TV; like european athletics meetings, club events, county events, cross countries, indoor events etc.
These athletes have been training for 4 years to be at their very best for those few weeks at the Olympics and their achievements should get every bit of praise and rewards they rightly deserve.

I'm sure James Toseland is just as dedicated and skilled in his chosen sport, and I wouldn't dream of belittling his achievements, even though to be honest I've never heard of him!

I guess it comes down to public exposure and TV coverage.

It's the good ol' British public - although sometime I do think the word "personality" is a bit of a misnomer.

Glad to see Freddie Flintoff got the third place award after his outstanding summer; as well as the special award for the girl from Manchester- Kirsty if I remember rightly. :D
