Hi
We fly to dlp on 22nd september and i have been soooooo excited but since all these things happening to planes at the moment it is really putting me off. Im a really nervous flyer as it is the last time i flew i was sobbing and screaming i was that scared :scared: . The other night when i was talking about my trip to my husband i started to cry when we talked about the flight.
We decided to fly because our friends are going at the same time as us and they had already booked there flights so i thought it would be a good idea for us all to be on the same flight but now i wish we had booked eurostar even though it would of cost more cause we would of had to stay over in london. I did look into how much it would cost to cancel our flights and book eurostar but it worked out way too epensive and we just aint got the money o it looks like i dont have a choice.
Really hope it dont spoil our first trip too dlp and also just hope i end up boarding the plane and not bottling it cause the kids would be so gutted. :sad1:

I'm sure you will be ok.

My wife hates flying however when we flew to Manchester she was fine, it was more the knowledge that it was only a 40 minute flight that made it ok for her. Have you tried getting some form of calming tablets from a chemists and see if they help??

Poor you.

I don't suppose it would help if I reminded you that there are literally thousands and thousands of flights every day and incidents are extremely, extremely rare. Realistically, you are safer flying than you are on a train or walking along the street, but I know that's little comfort.

My friend is a nervous flyer and she goes to her doctor and gets a scrip for just a few valium....could that help you? they don't knock you out totally, so you'd still be ok with the kids etc.

Alternatively you could try any one of the following natural remedies:

Kalms tablets (take double the dose)
Rescue remedy (liquid in a dropper best - put straight on your tongue)
Su-ner-ven tablets

finally...
eye mask, ipod, stressball.

Im flying from east midlands with bmi baby but not sure excatly how long the flight is.
Last year the doctor gave me diazapam but didnt help at all but someone told me i prob need a higher dose so gonna go back and ask him to give me as much as he can lol.
I have flown loads of time before but it seems to get worse every time.
When i was 12 i went too wdw and i wasnt scared of the flight at all. I would love too go back there but dont think i could face the flight. At least with dlp i can go by eurostar next year just wish i had the sense to book it this year.

The flight from East MIds is around an hour. I fly on that Bmibaby flight and it's always between 45 and 90 mins depending on weather and whether the airports are busy (i.e. do they have to wait for a landing slot).

If you really don't like flying then i would heartily recommend seeing your Dr again and talking through that the dose wasn't enough last time. He may be able to give you a different drug or different dose.

I'm not trying to scaremonger or be rude as i appreciate Emergency Kitten is trying to help (no offence intended EK) but you should never take more than the recommended dose of any medicines including herbal remedies without talking it through with a Dr or Pharmacist. Kalms, rescue rememdy etc are all good suggestions - talk to your pharmacist aboutwhats available and ask if they can be taken in conjunction with diazepam.

As an aside - Just because its herbal doesn't mean it's safe in fact many herbal remedies can be poisonous if you take too much (Ecinicea (sp?) for example can cause liver failure if you take it for more than the recommended 30 days at a time).

I'd second the ipod recommendation - try investing in some noise reducing headphones too - this will help take away the airplane noise which tries to remove you from the stress. Make sure you've stocked up on tunes that make you happy e.g. Disney parade songs are my happy songs. Find something that makes you smile and listen to them non-stop.

A final recommendation might be to consider having a 30-60 minute session with a qualified psychologist/psychiatrist who may be able to help figure out the cause of the fear, as you clearly didn't used to be afraid. Knowing why you are afraid may help you cope better. They will prob also be able to recommend some breathing techniques and visualisation exercises to help keep the fear/stress under control.

An old adage but try and remember that flying is the safest form of travel, i know it doesn't help much but it is true. You are more likely to crash your car in just short car journey than being in a plane crash forthe whole of your entire life.

Good luck , and whatever remember that a happy place awaits you when you arrive!

It was the pharmacist that told me to double the dose as they are very low dose tablets.

However, you are of course correct, and I was irresponsible to suggest it.

I'm sorry to hear about your fear of flying although I can understand where you're coming from.

This website has a lot of different options for helping you get through fear of flying, hope it helps

I have to say I am right there with you, I am a terrible flyer, I suffer panic attacks, tears, etc etc and I've taken prescribed medication for it, kalms, etc but when we last flew in June our flight was delayed and I honestly thought I was going to pass out and not be able to board as I was so ill but when we did board I kind of made a bit of a scene, won't go into too much detail but the flight attendants became aware of my fear and I have to say they were brilliant, from start to end they did everything they could to allay my fear and I felt so much better. I ended up feeling a bit bad due to all the attention I got but they were so good and they made a real difference to the flight for me so if I was you I would perhaps tell them when you board you're nervous and they will help. Good luck with it xxxx

I'm sure you'll be ok... I used to worry about flying etc but ever since I've had my girls I concentrate on them and forget about the fear. We fly a lot because both of our families live outside of UK so flying is A-must.

I avoid listening to news etc before my flights and everything is ok... In fact, we're flying to London this Saturday but I'm trying to not think about the bad things that could hapen to us,

Honestly, flying is the probably the safest form of transport.

I'm also a great believer in rescue remedy for stressful times. I'd also confide in the airline staff about how you're feeling.

Sending you lots of :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: and remember what a happy place you are going to. :wizard:
