Splitting Stay With Points and Cash

I am looking to book a stay using points for a few nights and cash for a few nights. Same resort, same room type.
If I do this, will I have to check out of the points room and check for the cash room?
Will I have to book the cash trip through Member's Services asking for the DVC discount or can I book the points nights through them but book with the Walt Disney website for the cash nights?
If I book through member's services do I have to pay for all my cash nights upfront?

If you book both points and cash through MS, they can be linked if for the exact same room. Currently you don't pay any cash up front if booked by MS. Beginning 10/14 you will have to pay a deposit equal to one night on cash reservations booked by MS.

If you book the cash portion through CRO, they can't be linked. The resort will try their best to keep you in the same room and you will need to check-out and then back in again.
