Split stay at Disney hotels

Hello All,

We are planning our first trip to Disneyland this June. I have already booked our room for the week at the Grand Californian, but our boys (8 and 14) saw pics of Disneyland Hotel and want to stay there. (I'm guessing it's the pool they like). So I was thinking we could do a split stay, 3 days at DLH and 4 at GC. We've done this before at WDW and it worked fine.

Has anyone done this at Disneyland recently that could share their experience? Does Disney transfer your bags for you?

Thanks!

We did this in 2013, we spent one night in DLH before moving over to VGC for the rest of our stay. The only difference between split stays between DLR and WDW is that at DLR they do not transfer your bags to the new resort like WDW does. We had to walk all of our luggage over to GCH after checking out of DLH. It wasn't hard to do because the two resorts are so close to each other, but it was nothing like we are used to when doing split stays at WDW. Now, I would not let this hinder you from doing the split stay, we really enjoyed staying at DLH, even if it was for just one night, (this was our first DLR trip and we really wanted to check out this resort), there are so many different Disney touches in the room and around the resort, definitely worth staying there for a couple of days. We are actually going to do the same thing for our trip in June, but this time around we are staying one night at PPH before moving over to VGC for the rest of our stay...we want to check out PPH this time around. Have a magical trip!!

Pretty sure the kids will appreciate GCH after being there. Recommend Fantasy Tower that has all the goods right there.

I think it's a great idea! You'll truly get the best of both worlds at the resort. I also don't believe the hotels will transfer your luggage (but do check at the hotel guest services). However, the hassle of doing it yourself will be worth it IMO. Also, I highly recommend reserving a cabana at the DLH pool for an afternoon during your stay. The pool can get very crowded on hot summer afternoons so knowing you have an afternoon with your own, shaded spot is so worth it and makes fighting crowds on other afternoons for swim breaks not as annoying. It's around $100 for a half day rental, and I believe you can reserve 60 days in advance? Or it might be 30. We've never found it as necessary to reserve a cabana at the GCH pool but that's an option too. :)

Thanks all I think I'm sold on the split stay even if we have to move our own bags, since this will likely be our only trip out west I want to see as much as we can. Thanks for the tip about the cabana, sounds like it's worth the price.

Just wanted to say that when we went for our first trip in 2013, we said this was going to be our once and that is it trip (we live in Illinois and WDW is our home away from home)....well, we are heading back (like I have already mentioned) for our second trip in June and between our 2 trips, DH and I did an over night trip to DLR during our "Adult's only" trip to Las Vegas....you are forewarned!!!! :rotfl:.

When we did a split stay in 2014, they actually did transfer our luggage.....we took it to the bell hop & tipped them around $30 & they said no problem. :thumbsup2

In the past we have done split stays and bell services have transferred our luggage for us. I have to say though that PPH and DLH have always been willing to help whereas the GCH has not. The one time we went from DLH to GCH it was the wonderful staff of the DLH that did it for us. Although the proximity of the GCH is awesome, our favorite hotel is the DLH. I think you will love it, and it's worth a try.

Thank goodness for the Disboards!
I'm doing a split stay 3 nights DGC & 3 nights DLH during Dapper Days. I'm glad I know now about the transferring of the luggage. I just assumed they did it for you. Thank you for the info.
