hi
We are planning our first trip to Disney with our kids who will be 2 and 5.
After looking at all the hotels, my heart was set on a family suite at AOA.
However, after pricing with a cast member for our travel dates (first week of march 2020) it is too expensive for us
What would be better: staying one full week in a mermaid room or doing a split stay half mermaid half suite? (Is doing a split stay on the same resort worth the hassle?)
Also, is it worth it to price lock the rate for AOA before the packages are released? (Since there will probably be a price increase...)

If you book a room for 2020 now, you are not locking in pricing. You are simply putting a deposit down to secure the room and your pricing will be adjusted to 2020 pricing once the 2020 packages are released later this year. Once you book, you will also want to be on the lookout for any discounts that are released for your travel period.

Doing a split is really a matter of personal preference. If you don't mind packing up and having bell services hold your luggage for you for, possibly, 5 hours or so (could be less if your second room is ready!) then at least that could be a way for you to experience a suite if your heart is set on it. When we do splits, we, typically do it to experience different resorts and locations throughout WDW, so maybe consider splitting between two resorts if you want to try it? If you like the values, a split between Pop and AoA or AoA and ASMo could be fun for the theming.
