Hi,
We're going on our first trip to Universal tomorrow. I have a four year old son that LOVES Spiderman. He has seen the clip of the ride on the web site and says he really would like to ride. He JUST makes the height requirement of 40". Has anyone been on the ride with a small child before? I want to make sure it is not to fast or scary for him. Is it a roller coaster? It's hard to tell from the web site.

It really depends on the child. Some love rollercoasters, some hate them.

If he wants to ride, I don't think you should stop him.

I just want to make sure it's not super fast or that it does not have any huge hills.

It is a slow moving ride with many quick jerks and turns. There is a large "simulated" drop at the end. Spidey is my 5 yr. old daughter's favorite ride.

It is an intense visual ride. HUGE bad guys lots of HEAT from FIRE, lighten bolts shaking the ride car.... My 6 yo couldnt make it thru the line, and my then 4 yo made it on, but had her eyes closed the whole time (which is prolly scarier than having your eyes open... lol)

Anyway, just remind him it is a ride, and if he likes it you ride it again, and if he doesnt, you ride something else.

But is it an intense ride.... (my all time fave ride in the history of rides too)

I've ridden it a few times.....if your 4-year old LOVES Spiderman, I would take him on it.. He'll never forget it and probably make you take him on it again.

when you are retreating in one section from a villian, the car will spin quickly. that might be the only problem for you child unless he likes things like storm ride.
the equivalent to disney's tea cups.

the 3D aspects are amazing. I'd let him go for it. it's not like any other attraction or ride you've experienced before.

My son is 3.5 and we're planning to take him on it next week as he/we LOVE Spidey too.

The only thing is he may not like wearing the glasses. I am not sure how everthing will look without them, maybe a bit blurry, but thats about it.

Its a GREAT ride

Thanks for all the replies - you are all really helpful. I think we will go for it! I think he'll do fine.

yep, it just looks kind of like a blurry double image without the glasses.

our 5yr old was scared when he first rode the ride--we pressed him and figured out that the "bad guys" scared him. so we got him to be a "part" of the ride the next time thru--we told him to yell for spiderman to help us, etc. after that he really got into the ride, we had to ride it about 25x before he was ready to go somewhere else

My 6yo son HATES coasters. He won't even do the Woody coaster in UO or Flying Unicorn in IOA (he doesn't even like the drop in Pirates at WDW!!). He loves Cat in the Hat, so I knew that the spins would not be a problem, and he is a big Spidey fan so when we were at the "Kids Free" event, i convinced him to do Spiderman. It is now his favorite ride at Universal, and we had to go back and ride it two more times before we left.

If your 4yo can handle Cat in the Hat, they can handle Spidey.

DD (7) loves coasters but doesn't like rides in the dark! ;)

She rode SpiderMan without glasses and just about survived but she refuses to do it again :hyper:

Think it was just the darkness that she didn't like - she absolutely hated IASW

IMO it's a great ride :thumbsup2

The last time I rode Spider Man I was sitting next to a boy who was about six years old. His mother and brother were sitting behind us. He got SO scared when Spidey jumped on our car that he turned to me (I did NOT know this child at all), and buried himself in my side and just stayed there sobbing. He did not look toward the front for the rest of the ride. I felt so sorry for him.
You know your child best and know the things that might frighten them.

My son was 6 when he went on it and loved every second of it... He was there when he was three but to small or he would have been on it then.

the rules for a parent shoud be. Ride it once before without your child. Explain your little one what to expect before you go on. Make sure you sit next to him and hold him and even (without bothering others) try to explain what is about to happen before it does (if you would think this could scare him - give an advance warning)

I use these simple rules and my son goes on everything from the moment his hight is acceptable for the ride... He loved Spider-Man

Evey child is different but when you explain what it is al about before you go on they are clever enough to know if the are up to it themself. Just listen to the child. It has always worked for us. Now my son asks me to go on a "let's do 100 rollercoasters in one trip" trip... I guess, in my case, I talk a little to much about theme parks and roller coasters.... :teeth:

Can someone explain the "heat from the fire" comment? I'm not a fan of pyrotechnics and don't like being in places where there's real fire that I can feel the heat of. Is there real fire during this ride? Or is the heat from a machine and you're watching a video of the fire?

Thanks
Joy

there's both. at one point you feel heat on the back of your neck. at another there is literally a fireball that shoots into the upper right part of the room.

More questions...

Can you smell a pyrotechnic smell (gas) in the ride?

Do you feel the heat on your face when the fireball shoots out? How long is the actual flame there?

We had a bad experience with a Batman show at Six Flags...the smell of gas or whatever they used to make the fire was so overpowering it made me sick...then the flames were so hot (and we were sitting too close in the front row) my kids got so terrified they were screaming the whole time.

you can smell the LP for maybe a second or two after the fireball. the effect coincides with a 3D visual, it's hard to explain, but it's more like a 'puff' of a fireball. I've seen the batman show at 3 different six flags, and I know what you're talking about. it's nothing like those pyros. it's about the size of two basketballs. it gets hot quickly, but then it's over.
