SPG points question

We stayed at the Dolphin on a teacher's rate in August for 2 weeks and have enough points (at 750 per night) to upgrade to a club level for our short 4 night stay after Christmas. My question is; how do we go about trying to upgrade? Do I call the Swan directly, call the starwood number or wait until check-in? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Nancy
 
We were at the Dolphin a few weeks ago and, at check-in, I asked to upgrade from a standard to a balcony. The desk clerk told me a balcony room was available, but that I had already been upgraded from a standard room to one with a nice view. He said that the only balconies he had left didn't really have great views.

I kind of wanted a balcony, but a nice view would be good too... he convinced me to inspect my current room and return to the desk if I wanted a balcony.

Well my view was breathtaking so I kept the room.

I guess the point of my story is that it is possible to use points to upgrade at check-in.
 
Call the SPG 800 number 5 days (or less) to your arrival date and you can use your points to "buy" upgrades. You can do it upon check in too but if you are like me you will want to do it before you arrive just so you know what to expect when you arrive.
