We called the airline to get seat assignments for our upcoming trip. Our DS8 has scoliosis and needs to still travel in a FAA approved car seat. (We have the Sunshine Kids). The airline agent told me to go to guest services at the park, and we could get a pass for him not to have to wait long in lines. (He is not in a wheel chair, but because of his condition, there are many rides he cannot go on) Is there a pass we can get for him? We have never heard of it before......

I am going to move this to the part of the disABILITIES Forum that is about travel to WDW (it started out on the disABILITIES COmmunity Board, which is more about things in general).
What you are asking about is a Guest Assistance Card. It is not meant to shorten the wait in lines, but to provide assistance needed by people because of their disabilities. It's not given by diagnosis or disability, but by need. So, think about what his needs are.
There is information about Guest Assistance Cards in the disABILITIES FAQs thread. You will find that thread near the top of this board or I have in link in my signature that takes you there.

If he has problems with either standing or walking for long distances, you probably want to consider a stroller, wheelchair (depending on his size - the rental wheelchairs at WDW are adult sized) or special needs stroller. The distances involved in a WDW are much larger than most people think - it's easy to walk 4 or 8 miles a day. THe distances walked when using a Guest Assistance Card are not really going to be much less than if you did not have a Guest Assistance Card.

I don't mind you asking at all! He has congenital cervical scoliosis, about 35 degree curvature....including multiple fusions and deformities from C2 to T1 or 2. He also has fused ribs, which have not been an issue at all (so far). He also has a Chiari I malformation that has not been a problem, more of an incidental finding on an MRI. I have only talked with one other parent that the child had a similar scoliosis, it apparently is very rare. We doctor at Mayo in Rochester. He has been very fortunate that he has not had to have any surgeries, but many doctor appts, MRI and such.

Our biggest God send has been a NUCCA chiropractor that has kept him "in line". We went for a Mayo appt found out his curve was up to 42 degrees, and were told that he would very likely have to have spinal fusion the next summer to fuse the few little pitiful joints in his neck to keep if from curving out of control.....it is a loooong story but we found out about an Upper Cervical chiroprator that only adjusts the C1 joint (his only normal one in his neck) We took him to the chiropractor for about 9 months, then back for our recheck at Mayo. We knew his neck looked better, back to his "normal". We really felt we would have good news, the doctor at Mayo came in and said, "I am not sure what has happended since your last visit, but I have never seen a congenital curve improve" He was back to his "normal" 35 degree curve. We told him about the chiropractor, no response was made positive or negative from the doctor. He said he would not have to see him for 2 years! It was a gift from heaven! He is due for that check now next week, and I feel his neck still looks the same. We are hopeful for good news again.

Prayers to your DS! My sister(18) had a spinal fusion two years ago. After one year post-op, she went to every ride in disneyland!

P.S. If you're going to California and going to Knott's Berry Farm, don't go to Ghost Rider. It's too wild.

Have fun!

There are a number of rides that he will never be able to ride. Too bad he would love to go on them. We cannot let him on RnR, but he LOVES Tower or Terror! He will ride that ride over and over again. Anything too jarring, he will always have to avoid, but he knows it and seems to understand. He is just happy to be able to go.

I do not think we will get the GAC card, unless he gets too uncomfortable waiting in lines. Usually he does OK, but we try and not stay in the parks for too long. I guess I am not sure what benefit the GAC will give him......

i would talk to him about using a wheelchair or stroller... for a long time i spent less time in the parks, but once i started using a wheelchair in the parks, i could go all day! it may be a way to spend a little more time in the parks :)

I have Chiari I also. My scoliosis is very mild, but my Chiari is not. But it took many years for the doctors to realize it was more than "incidental" (the exact same word used on my MRI!).
I've had the decompression surgery for it, and a 3-level fusion on my neck after I lost my normal curve, so understand about not riding some rides!
Hope you have a great trip.
