Special Attention for our Kids?

Just a curious question. Do you with kids find that the characters give any special attention to your kids because they are "special"? I ask because last year when we went to Animal Kingdom, "Tigger" was extra lovey to my son, Garrett, and he absolutely loved it.

Many of them do, yes. I think they work harder to bring some of the magic to kids who need more of a break. Not all characters, but most, I think. Even more true for face characters in my experience.

My little guy is in a wheelchair, (and is also a very adorable red head). Characters have been known to leave their line to visit him. In many cases it will be because the character is visiting one of Kevin's sisters - and they notice our interest and come over. That happened the other day particulary with Pinocchio.

Our best experiences are those when the character knows enough to get really close, and gives him some tactile stimulation. I am still in 7th heaven from this trip. I've also found that US and IOA are just as good with him as WDW. Wheelsie is the one who gave us the confidence to check that place out.

Yep - as has been said - this is the best place on earth for families with a disabled family member.

We have run into some very perceptive characters that knew how to warm a child up to them. One of our best experiences was with Neauty and the Beast when Katrina was about 8. Belle told Beast that she thought Katrina looked a lot like Cinderella. She asked both Katrina and the Beast yes and no questions so that they could respond to her and have a conversation. Katrina still giggles when we remind her of the time Belle thought she was Cinderella.

Not only are they great if handicapped kids but I find them great with handicapped adults also. Every time I go I am treated great by the characters,
I love to take photographs of the characters and bring them back to my special students. Some have never been to Disney. They always insist on someone taking a picture with me and them as well.

Make sure the other family members get attention too!

I have a friend who took her child on a make a wish trip. The characteurs gave the child LOTS of attention. However they ignored the sibling. Years later she told the family how bad it made her feel. She understood her older sister was terminally ill but she was a young kid and wanted to see Mickey and the others and felt ignored. On the same theme make sure you get pictures of siblings too while you make that special trip!
