Chapter 2 - "Look Mama - Are Those the Arches of Heaven?"
When we last left off Carsyn
and I
were speeding down 35W towards Iowa.
Together.
And no one had died yet!
Traffic was moving swiftly and it was dark but the roads were fine. It was about a 3 1/2 hour drive usually from Burnsville to Des Moines. We had a good chance to get caught up on boys at school and friends at school and what she might like to do when she got to college. With all this rigamaroll refarding Treyner and moving colleges, it was not forgotten that she is a junior and we need to start applying for places in less than a year.
Most of her friends want to stay close to home but I really hope she picks a place a bit farther away. I really do believe that there is a lot of growing up that happens in college and when you come home all the time it just prevents many normal transitions into adulthood. She is ready and she is smart. She makes really good choices for her life and I am hoping she likes Anderson and Treyner stays there because having both of them at the same school would be great for Mom - I don't think they think so yet though!
We crossed the Iowa border and needed a rest stop.
Now for those of you not from the Midwest - you may not know how deep the hatred between Iowa and Minnesota is. Rest assured it is massive.
Jokes about Iowa being the 3rd link to a step child to your goat is not uncommon. My kids Dad is from Iowa. I went to college in Iowa. So for me there is the knowledge that all things Iowa are not sub-3rd world country but I like giving grief to Iowa as much as my fellow Minnesota neighbors.
Like one of my favorites at the Holiday time:

Because God could not find one virgin or three wise men!
This being said, we needed to pee and if you have to pee there is no nicer rest stops in anywhere we have driven to this past year but in Iowa. Esp. the ones when you first cross the border. (Where is the Chihuahua smilie?)
In fact their Welcome Center a bit farther down the road is in a new barn structure and it has a casino there as well in case you have to gamble your money away before you spend it on one tooth strippers in Des Moines.
(Sorry if I have offended any one here that might have one tooth and be a stripper from Des Moines. Or if it is your sister. Perhaps Grandma. )

This time though we just swung through a normal rest stop.
And dare I say it...
With the snow and lights...
It was beautiful.
In fact it was the most beautiful thing as far as landscape design I had ever seen in Iowa.
Now maybe in August with dead grass and dog poo people will not pick up - it may not look so spectacular. But that night - it was pretty.
We also took the time to eat at a place that had closed in our town for 4 months to be torn down and re built.
That's right! We had not been at a Mc D's since July and that seemed to be what we were craving! So we pulled in and got to the order menu and decided to split a chicken strips select meal. I pulled up to pay and after that, Carsyn and I continued to talk.
Then Carsyn pointed out the woman hanging out the second drive thru window - flapping her arms at us like a crane with wings.
Oh yeah - these new fangled Mc Donald's have a second pick up window.
I put er in drive and sauntered to the crane lady...all the while now aware that the ghetto miser van with it's inside chalk full of suitcases and crud, makes us look like we are the family living down by the river and this may be our last meal.
I tried to make a chuckle out of it - told her we were from a place that had not had a Mc Donald's for 4 months and we were so plumb excited we just had forgot the process of ordering food, paying for it and then pulling forward to pick it up.
She said, "Mc Donald's has been doing it this way for more than 4 months."
Well excuse me Miss. Mc Donald's but your name tag says Britney not GOD so why don't you show some compassion for those not quite up to speed with all things Mc Donaldsie and help the downtrodden out with some kindness. I mean you could be gentle to our fragile ego. We are in a ghetto miser van and you don't know that we are heading to Disney and not our spot on the river - or swamp as it is Iowa.
So we grabbed our food from the last runner up for Miss. Sunshine 2004 and then she handed me a glass wrapped in a Mc Donald's bag.
I asked her what it was.
She now looked at me like I had been on Mars for the past 10 years and explained we got a free Coke glass with our order.
I added this incase some of you also don't frequent heart attack hotel.
Well sweet. My first souvenir of the trip and all it took was public humiliation and word flogging from Britney and I was all set.
BTW: The Mc D's is in Clear Lake, Iowa. The place of the well known plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. If you are ever here there is a memorial at the Surf Ballroom where they last played and in the field the plane crashed.

Found this interesting video of the site - for those who will never go to Clear lake Iowa and yet care! In fact these Brits are more ballsy then most of us winter lovers - I would have not walked to it in that cold and snow!

In less than an hour we hit Des Moines and the hotel Dan was at.

Honestly - I feel that blessed.
He and I plan on getting married sometime this year - depending on kids schedules and where we finally decide we want to have the event at. We have thrown out ideas for Disney and Disney's Vero Beach but not sure yet. Maybe I will throw more ideas out to you all and you can help decide!
He is a senior corporate trainer for a major telephone company and is amazing at what he does. In fact we are hoping he will end up working for himself soon and be a contractor so he can diversify his training into more than just the communications industry. It could mean a huge pay raise in 5-10 years and right now he just feels stagnat. We shall see where that leads as well.
He has been traveling again in November and December for his job so I was excited to see him and spend time together.
I know in many situations, kids do not like the soon to be bonus parent but my kids adore him. They know he is not their father and he doesn't try to take over that role. They seek him out for advice and conversation and it makes me smile when they call him and not me to ask about anything.
I think it is the true judge of charachter when kids want a relationship with another adult in their life. They love Dan and I am so glad he is the type of person that my kids want in their lives - not feel forced to be around.
When we got to the hotel, Carsyn and I hauled in a few things at were pleased it only took 3 hours to get there!
I was ready for bed right away and she decided to hit the hot tub for a bit.
We wanted to be up and out the door before 5 a.m. So we set the alarm clock for 4:10 a.m. and got ready for the drive to Tennessee and to meet up with Shannn and see Treyner!
I was so excited I did not think I could sleep!
