Can someone please walk me through the process of:
After the original airfare is purchased over the phone let's say. The Ding come up with unbelievable fare. I don't understand some of the terms and how to proceed, being both on phone and internet cancelling one booking the other, money left over where does it go.
Thanks in advance.
Chris

I'm moving this over to transportation board :) I'm sure there are a lot of SouthWest experienced fliers there.

Your refund is tied to the Reservation Number of the original flight. If you cancel by phone, the agent will let you know the number. Write it down! You'll need it when you book your Ding! Your refund will be divided into two parts: the airfare and the taxes. I always have the taxes refunded to my credit card. The rest will stay "on account" with Southwest attached to the original reservation number and the name on the credit card used to make that reservation.

When you go to book the Ding! you will come to a screen where you enter the names of the people traveling. Right under there is a button that says " Apply Travel Funds". Click on that and type in the name of the person on the credit card used to purchase your original fare and the original reservation number. Southwest will apply the amount from the refund to the new fare :).

If you think that there might be a lower Ding! in the future, book two one-way trips instead of a round trip. That way if one leg comes up cheaper but the other leg is more expensive you can re-book just the cheaper leg.

Lastly ... once you have your Ding! reservation in place, I would get a copy of your remaining balance on your "Ticketless Travel Funds" from your refund. You have 1 year to use that $$. To do that, go to the Travel Tools menu on www.southwest.com and click on Ticketless Travel Funds. From there enter the name and reservation number information and print the screen for future reference.

Good luck!

Does that 1 year period start from the date you booked the original reservation or is it 1 year from the date you cancel/rebook the reservation?

Sorry, I'm not sure. I think it's from the date of the original flight. I wonder if the OP got her Ding! It took me a while to type out my response to her ...

So, are you a CHRIStopher or a CHRIStine? Inquiring minds want to know :).

ETA: I see by your little pirate guy you're probably male. Sorry to jump to the gender conclusion. I think of most of the DISers are female :). And no ... it's not because you were ditzy!

BTW, you should grab that Ding! as soon as you see it.

The 1 year period starts from the date you booked the original reservation and you must use it to TRAVEL within that year.

For example, in Jan 2007 you book May flights. A DING comes out and you get a credit (or you have to cancel your reservation for any reason) The TTF from this reservation must be used for a trip where you complete the travel before Jan 2008. (not just make the reservation)

That's more restrictive than I realized. Thanks for the info!
