From JSonline:

"Southwest Airlines, the nation's largest low-fare carrier, plans to begin flying out of Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport later this year, the company is to announce Wednesday.

Southwest's entry into Milwaukee will likely bring more choices, and lower ticket prices, for area fliers. It also brings another formidable competitor for Midwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, AirTran Airways and other carriers that fly from Mitchell.

The announcement is expected at Dallas-based Southwest's annual shareholders meeting. This story will be updated when more information becomes available.

One industry source said Southwest would probably offer non-stop flights to leisure destinations such as Las Vegas, Phoenix and Orlando, Fla. Midwest, Mitchell's largest carrier, cut back on flights to those cities, and other Florida leisure destinations, when it announced a 40% service reduction last year.

Midwest Airlines/Midwest Connect remains Mitchell's No. 1 carrier, with a 35.1% market share in March, according to airport data. Delta, which is integrating Northwest Airlines into its system, is No. 2, with 22.6% share. AirTran, another low-fare carrier, is No. 3, with 19.8% share.

A customer satisfaction survey, released Tuesday by the University of Michigan, rated Southwest with the highest score, 81 on a zero-to-100 scale. After Southwest, Continental Airlines Inc. scored 68, Delta, 64, American Airlines, 60, US Airways, 59, Northwest, 57, and United Airlines, 56."

I just got that email, too.
It's about time!

I have our October trip booked on Airtran but I may wait a bit longer now for our December trip to see what kind of flights Southwest has for us.

Yay! I'd much rather drive to Milwaukee than Midway! Woot for Southwest!!! :woohoo:

Woohoo!

Does Southwest charge you for reserving seats ahead of time? Airtran was great with the exception of that little detail.

I'm thrilled there will be another choice. I have our flights for next Feb to Tampa, but in 2011 we're planning another trip to WDW. I will be excited to have more than one option.

No -- SWA has none of those "annoying" fees you see everywhere else...

Of course, you CAN'T reserve your seats in advance on SW even if you want to, right?

I think SW is the airline where you check in exactly 24 hrs in advance and are given a boarding #.

My daughter is a flight attendant for SWA. She called me this morning as soon as the news was released to the employees. I've been asking her about this for a while now. We just moved back to Milwaukee from the west coast and were able to use SWA all the time. We were disappointed they weren't here yet, but a year is not too long to wait ! I'm so excited about this!!

SWA does not have assigned seating. they board according to when you got your boarding pass. Between the A and B groups they allow family boarding if your boaring passes are not in the A group.

I thought Southwest was great when they came to PIT. They had really cheap fares. But as USAirways pulled out of PIT, SW's fares have been creaping up. It was over $350 for my flights next month, I ended up transferring some hotel points into my SW account to get a free ticket (but had to leave a day earlier). AirTran raised theirs also. Don't count on them being cheap forever, especially if they lose competition at the airport.

Yay! We only fly Airtran because we like to fly out of Milwaukee, but I like SWA better. We are anxiously waiting for Airtran to release their Christmas schedules...hopefully, SWA releases Milwaukee soon and then I can choose between the two.

Wow....there has been a lot of speculation about where Southwest might begin service......and Milwaukee was certainly NOT on my radar. Congrats to Milwaukee!

I need to get flights in early/mid December and have been watching AirTran for sales. Now I'm hoping that AT and SW will battle it out and we'll benefit from even lower fares! I'm going to hold off booking for awhile to see what happens.

I wish they'd made this announcement last week! i bought my flight for November already. BUT..... it's ok! I can fly SWA anytime thereafter for free! I'm so excited this airline is coming into MKE!!!!

I wonder how early SWA will open up schedules for Milwaukee. They haven't announced a start date for service yet-I'm hoping they open December for Milwaukee as soon as they open December for Midway. Lower fares would be great, but SWA has another advantage of not charging extra bag fees. Huge money saver for our family. Now if SWA would be a resort check in airline at WDW it would be perfect. :goodvibes

This is very exciting! We are loyal Air Tran fans, but I would certainly try SWA if they were cheaper.

That is exactly what SWA is counting on!!!
