Southwest Airlines Credit Expiration Question

My airfare has went down for our upcoming September trip (hopefully it will even more). So we have a credit. If say the credit expiration is May 15th (I can't remember exactly when it is but that's ballpark) - does that mean I have to have a trip booked and pay for it with that credit by then? Or does that mean travel has to take place before then??
