This is a copy of an email that the president of our company sent out to our office here in MA. A little bit of background, this man is a brilliant businessman, but even more importantly, he is an incredible person . He has proven to me that to succeed in business you can also have a heart, and be human. This man led the charge when we had a fundraising drive for the victims of 9/11 by donating $75,000 out of his own pocket!

Now, as the holiday season is upon us, here is his latest 'charitable donation scheme' We have a 'Profanity free' policy in our building. So if the President or the Chairman of the board swear, they donate $3, if a VP or Director swear they donate $2, and any of us peons who cuss, donate $1. We did this for the first time 3 years ago, and donated over $600 to the Globe Santa (local paper Boston Globe, takes donations and buys Christmas gifts for needy and deserving families),

So here is what he is looking for, any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated:

A woman who goes to my church is looking for a "child friendly" dog for her special needs child. Something around the size of a Lab.

She doesn't care what type of dog or if it is a mixed breed. If you know of anyone who is trying to get rid of their dog or a place where a dog can be bought inexpensively, please let me know. This woman has FOUR special needs children and I guess that an incredible bond is created between the dog and the type of needs these children have.

Thanks!

You can PM me or reply to the thread. Thanks everyone!

Um... am I the only one having a hard time contemplating the fact that the head of a company (sounds like a good-sized one) can't find an unwanted dog? Are we not aware of the thousands that are being killed every day because they can't find homes? It's as easy as visiting one of gazillions of shelters or looking in the classifieds.

As far as I know, they are not pet-owners (like myself) and really do not know where to go. I was just looking for a little advice, not to get flamed. I'm sorry if this offends you. I was looking for advice from anyone in my neck of the woods who had been to a specific shelter or might know of someone looking to send a pup to a good home.

Debster, my SIL speaks highly of the shelter in Scituate. She said they do a wonderful job in matching the needs/wishes of the adopters and adoptees. She worked with them in finding a suitable adult dog for my elderly father.
Let me know if you'd like me to get the phone number for you.

I'm not flaming you. I'm just astounded at the lack of knowledge about such a huge problem. I really feel like America is in the dark ages sometimes.

Your private shelters/rescues are usually more aware of the animals' personalities and needs. Breed rescues tend to be especially well-informed. Try www.petfinder.com to find a specific animal in your area. Start by looking for Labs. Boxers are known for being great with kids, plus they shed much less than Labs.

Labs are great with kids. However, I second DocRafiki's suggestion of a boxer. I had a friend who always had boxers and they were GREAT dogs. I think a boxer would be wonderful with special needs children.

Thanks DocR, bad day at work, maybe I'm a bit hypersensitive. I am the first to admit I am totally clueless with animals (allergic to everything with 4 legs and fur  ) So I absolutley have no idea. I know adopting a shelter dog would be the way to go, so thanks everyone for the links.

When I was growing up, there was a boxer in my grandparents neighborhood, and we did used to have a lot of fun with him, and he was always super with us. I will make that suggestion too.
