Hello All:

I just picked up The South Beach Diet book and it is fascinating reading. No, really!

I am not really into the whole diet scene. (My sister has tried every diet that has ever been along. She is 17 years older than I am and I grew up watching her :yo-yo: so I have always avoided diets.) But this was a great book. It explains a great deal about body/blood chemistry and why some things work and other do not. I actually think we could eat like this for the rest of our lives.

High blood pressure and diabties (sp?) are common in our family so we promised our mother, who was recently diagnosed with both, that we would all start taking better care of ourselves. This may be the way to do that.

I've been doing the South Beach Diet for a few weeks. It's a good carb/good fat diet. At first, I didn't see a lot of differences from Atkins (I'd been doing Atkins since May)./ But you add more GOOD carbs than Atkins allows. Atkins also allows more fat. South Beach asks you to eat low-fat cheeses and to stay away from most animal fats. It seems a lot more "sensible" than Atkins, although I can't argue with a lot of the results I've seen with Atkins. We really need to get out of the "mind-set" of eating refined sugars & processed flours. That is the basis for both Atkins & South Beach.

I started SBD August 25 and have lost 21 pounds. I was very strict the first three weeks and followed his plan almost exactly. Since then I have made my own meal plans with occasionally throwing in one of his. Every once in a while, I'll have a meal I shouldn't, but for the most part, I have avoided all white flour and sugar. I will say I think some of my meals are more Atkins like. I bought a Low Carb cookbook, and it probably has too much fat, but the recipes are tasty! I, too, enjoyed reading his book!

Hi,

I've been following SBD since August 21, 2003.

I have lost 18 pounds. I have gone off the plan a couple of times since then but I have pretty much followed the plan and exercised several times a week.

I have tried several different diets, however, I like SBD because there is variety and I have been able to have it work in my life. I am a vegetarian so Atkins would not work for me but SBD has.

I have told several friends about SBD and now they are following it, however, as with anything else you have to be ready and it has to make sense to you.

I'm looking forward to August 21, 2004 when I can post and say I have been following this for a year and I am still with it.

Good Luck!

Both DH & I are in late PhaseII/early Phase III on South Beach. Since the start of summer, he lost 35 lbs. & I lost about 15.(I lost about 50 lbs. pre-SB) We are now adjusting to a permanent low-carb Way of Life, or Way-of-Eating (WOE) as I've seen it called on this Bd. It is a very workable eating plan & we have become the diet-equivalent of the "Shell Answer Man" in our office. Everyone who want to lose weight come to us. We no longer need to use our SB book, so it is constantly on-loan to prospective SBers.
We have also added regular exercise to our life style and the combination of SB & exercise has us looking alot like we did when we got married. (Except for our hairstyles, my current style is shorter and DH has a little less hair to style!)
SB is not for everyone and I admit it is not perfect. While we have lost our physical cravings, we emotionally still miss pasta, pizza, great Italian bread and chocolate anything. Phase III allows us to ease these items back into our life, but we must be careful to keep it under control or we could have a serious backslide. I am hopeful that we have permanently changed our relationship to food, so even if we gain some lbs., its back to Phase I, as the SB book suggests.

Welcome to WISH, Leader of the club, I'm glad to see you here. I follow Atkins which is a low carb plan and I know we have several WISHers who are on the South Beach plan and they love it.

Will you be joining us here and taking the WISH challenge? Please say yes. I'd love to have you in my support group.
