Sorry this is kind of long.

We have been taking DD to Disney for years. She is hard of hearing. She has a mid-range bi-lateral hearing loss with some high and low frequency loss too. Basically they describe it as having the hearing of a 70 year old. Because of where her loss is hearing aids would not work for her. They would make the good parts of her hearing not work as well.

So. She uses a sound amplification at school. Her deaf ed. teacher told us at WDW they have sound amplification that she should take advantage of that will help her enjoy our trips more. I researched and found this to be true.

Now, here's the problem the last two times we have gone we have had problems because no one seems to know what we need. They say well use this with her hearing aids. No. We just need something to make it louder without hearing aids.

We have been disappointed on our last two trips because we can not find exactly what we need to help her. Even after talking to the managers at Guest Relations they did not know what I needed! I keep saying sound amplification system but maybe I am asking for the wrong thing? Anyone know what I should be asking for? I would like to make this trip better for her. :)

TIA

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

Here is a link to the WDW Official Site where hearing assistance is described. It appears that you may be asking about an "Assistive Listening Device" which can be rented.

Actually there are 2 types of Assistive Listening Devices and some of the CMs are clueless about them. I have given her a person to contact directly who can give her the needed information. There is one that you just us with there head phones and another that can be used with a cochlear implant or your own headphones.

Thank you for the information! I have sent out an e-mail and hope that this trip will be so much better for my DD.

 Thank you!

Just wanted to let everyone who may read this know I heard back from WDW and they have updated their amplification system. It now costs $100 to have for the day (refundable when you return the unit at the end of the day) but it is now all infared and should avoid many of the old problems of not knowing where to sit, not always working, etc... Just ask at Guest Services! :)
