Sorry I did not see anywhere else to ask ticket related

They do not expire... So as far in advance as you want
Actually, they do now. Change as of Feb of this year. They expire in December of the following year

There is a lot unknown about just what will happen when a ticket is expired. It's anticipated you'll get at least what you paid for them in to apply towards a new ticket

I would buy them as soon as you know you are going, none the less

I don't think unused tickets "expire" but you have to pay the price difference if you try to use them at a time after prices have increased. At least, that was my understanding.

Mine as well. But technically, they do expire.

That's what I was afraid of the disadvantage of go so early next year we won't have the 60 day window because prices will be one thing 2017 when they are purchased and another 2018 when we go

That's not a "thing."

If you buy tickets 6 months to a year, or so, in advance, you can use those early-purchased tickets for your trip and pay nothing extra for tickets during your trip.

Basically here are the new ticket rules:

If you buy a ticket today, you will pay today's prices. Then it will be good until December 2018. Until then that ticket can be used without needing to pay any increase. After December 2018, the ticket VALUE will remain, which you can use to buy a new ticket; that new ticket could be less expensive than the original one (i.e. If the original was a 10-day park hopper and you instead bought a 4-day base) in which you wouldn't have to pay anything out of pocket and the remaining balance would stay in your account. Most likely, however, ticket prices will have increased, so you will pay the difference between your account balance and new ticket price. Note: no one has first hand knowledge of the exact mechanisms of how this will work as no tickets have expired yet.

So, if you have the money now and know for sure you will be going to the parks, it doesn't hurt to buy a ticket now. Ticket prices increase without warning, so if you wait you may pay a higher price.

But in terms of pre-booking the only time when you NEED to have a ticket in your account is for fastpasses (so 60 or 30 days before check in). You can make resort reservations, dining reservations, tours/special events, etc, all without having a ticket assigned to your account.

I highly encourage you to purchase tickets prior to your 60-day FP+ window opening. As others have said, if you buy them now or, say, in October before your window opens, they will be valid for your trip in January.

You can either buy them directly from Disney or from a reputable third-party discounter like Undercover Tourist. Or, add them to your room reservation to create a WDW package (I believe from another thread you said you were staying at Pop?)

I'm not sure where you heard that tickets purchased in 2017 cannot be used in 2018, but it's simply not true.
