Sorry...another dress code question :(

My boyfriend and I are going on the 5/1/04 cruise and since he is basically a starving student, does not own a tuxedo or a dark suit and spent his money for the cruise and excursions. He does have nice light pants and a nice olive cordoroy jacket...and a tie of course. I would rather not chance it and eat at the buffet on formal and semi-formal night, he however is all gung-ho for it. He called Disney today, to set my worries at ease, and they told him that it was black tie optional that a jacket and tie was perfectly fine. I am still unsure about it though, I would rather not have anyone looking at us disapprovingly as we waltz in. Has anyone wore just a jacket, pants and tie, not necessarily a dark suit?

A jacket and tie would be fine. There are plenty of people who do not even go that far. No one will give you a second look.

I saw only a few people with tuxes on. My husband wore navy pants and a corduroy jacket and a tie. Don't worry about it.

I'll second that. I think a jacket and tie would do the trick for formal night, semi-formal night, and Palo.

You know, you can always get ready for dinner and see what others are wearing and whether or not you're going to be comfortable. You can head upstairs at the last minute.

But, I agree with others about having a jacket and tie and being fine.

My husband wore a tie every day for work and REFUSED to wear one on vacation. He wore short sleeve button down shirts (the nice kind not the nerdy, kind) and never looked out of place. Go, have fun, wear what you want.

My DH wouldn't wear a jacket. He had a long sleeve button down shirt with a tie. He looked fine. I don't remember any bad looks because he didn't have a jacket on for formal night.
And, if you don't tell anyone.........he wore the same shirt, tie & pants to semi-formal night! ssshhhh, don't tell!!

Hi Monkeygirl,

We are on the same cruise as you - come join us on the cruise meet boards - we have quite a group going.

The jacket and tie will be fine. My husband does not own a jacket and really doesn't have a need for a jacket, so I didn;t spend the money to buy one. He will be wearing a black long sleeve dress shirt with black dress pants. He looks very sharp in his outfit and I can't imagine anyone giving disapproving looks. And if they do - they need to get a life

One othewr tip though - if you feel like you would like him to have a suit, check with your locak goodwill store. They usually have a nice selection of suits for very little money.

He will totally fit in. In all honesty, on my last cruise, many people were dressed in sunday clothes and not formals. Everyone was just fine. I still prefer the dark suit/tux and my wife wears a gown as we don't get to dress up as often as we'd like except for work, but that's not formal..... It's your vacation, enjoy it the way you like as long as you are dressed properly.

Loads of people wear just that, or even much less, I'm sure. I honestly didn't even notice what the people at the next table were wearing, let alone everyone in the dining room. Don't miss out on the fun of formal night! If you see someone looking disapprovingly, give them a smile; they obviously need one I think your priorities on the trip and the excursions are right on target; I hope you have a fabulous time!

I agree totally with dthogue, I was reading a thread the other day that was posted about dress code and some people were really having a pop at a family of sweatpant's wearer's.
I would have thought these people would have had better and more interesting things to have occupied thierselves with than what the people on the next table were wearing !!!
Enjoy your cruise have loads have fun and be comfortable.
As people say it's not your outfit that matters it's the person wearing it.
I would sooner be in the company of a happy cruiser wearing a cordjacket,etc than a arrogant suit wearer, ( not that im saying everyone who wears a suit is arrogant, don't misquote me, but you know what I mean )
You have saved up to go ,it's your vacation Enjoy !!!

I wear a dress shirt, tie, slacks, dark socks and sandals to the formal and semi formal dinners. If I went to Palo for dinner, I would wear the same. It really doesn't matter. One cruise we sat at a huge table (many families none related or friends BEFORE the cruise). We had my attire, a suit, a sport coat and a tux at the table. And we still had a great time!!!

Go for it, you won't be rocking the boat. Within minutes of making the "big entrance" into the restaurant (and that entrance is WHY everyone is dressed up isn't it!) you will be interacting with your tablemates and wait staff and no one will give a rip (or notice) what you are wearing.

First cruise, took a suit. The entire purpose of the jacket was to be worn from your room to the restaurant (where I took it off to eat) and back to the room. Took up a ton of luggage space for 5 minutes of "work". NEVER AGAIN!!!
