I just bought the new Sony DSC H50. I actually upgraded from the H5. I love the fact that it has great zoom capability and I can manually change the settings but I'm not positive what I want for certain pictures. I have always played around with my cameras without understanding what I'm doing and am now wondering if I should take a class to better understand it. The H50 has an ISO as low as 80 and goes up to ISO 3200. The F stop goes as low as 2.7 and up to 8. If I am taking pictures at POTC what settings would I want to get the clarity I would get with a flash. What settings are best for fireworks? I appreciate the help. I have always gotten some good pictures not knowing. I would rather get great pictures with some understanding.

Short answer is you won't get good photos unless there is good light on the ride.

The Sony (like all P&S cameras) has a small senor, which means as the ISO goes up, it gets noisy. As the ride is moving, you'll need a fast shutter (less light hitting the sensor). Again, not good. At f2.7 probably won't be all that sharp either.

To put it in perspective, it's diffult to get good shots with a DSLR (large sensor) and fast lenses.

But, why not experiment? :) I would try ISO1600 or 3200, shoot wide (so you can get f2.7), shutter about 1/30sec or a bit faster for POTC. The images will look best if you downsize them.

I'll defer to the experts for fireworks.

I have gotten some decent shots with out the flash on POTC(no flash photography in there) using 1600-3200 iso, 1/60, ap. priority and post process with Noiseware. Experiment and look at you EXIF data.
