I am putting together a video montage for my Dad's 70th birthday. I expect it to be about 5 minutes long. Any good song recommendations to play with it? Thanks

I think you might want to go more classic with some Gershwin songs, or something more from the era when he was growing up. For ideas, there are all sorts of compilation CDs, like best songs of the 40s, 50s, etc.

What type of songs do you want?

If you want songs from when he was born, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (Andrews Sisters) is peppy and well-known. This was the big band era. You could probably google a list of popular songs from that year.

Daddy's Hands - Holly Dunn -tear jerker
Seeing my Father in Me - Paul Overstreet
Through the years - Kenny Rogers
How Sweet it is to be loved by you - James Taylor
Unforgettable - Nat King Cole or Natalie Cole

I would try and pick a song or portion of for each decade of his life...

I was thinking stuff from the 1940's, too. "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller was a huge hit in 1940 (still is today). I associate a lot of music to when I was a teenager, so maybe you can choose something from when he was a teen? Something from 1955-1958?

At the Hop, Yakety Yak, Rockin' Robin were all big during that period. :thumbsup2

"I Did It My Way" from Frank Sinatra or is that too sappy?

There's a Paul Anka song called The Times of Your Life that will have everyone in the room bawlin'.

The Times of our Lives.

I vote for "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets.
In it's favor:
>It came out in 1955, when your dad was 15, and probably listened to the radio a lot.
> It has a nice beat for timing your slide advances.
> There is a little symbolism in the lyrics.

I like "100 Years" by Five for Fighting. It's a song about the progression of life... A very sweet, simple song with mostly just piano and vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR-qQcNT_fY

"100 Years"

I'm 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
I'm 22 for a moment
She feels better than ever
And we're on fire
Making our way back from Mars
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
I'm 33 for a moment
Still the man, but you see I'm a they
A kid on the way
A family on my mind
I'm 45 for a moment
The sea is high
And I'm heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy, Time to lose yourself
Within a morning star
15 I'm all right with you
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
Half time goes by
Suddenly you’re wise
Another blink of an eye
67 is gone
The sun is getting high
We're moving on...
I'm 99 for a moment
Dying for just another moment
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
15 there's still time for you
22 I feel her too
33 you’re on your way
Every day's a new day...
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey 15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
