My daughters sweet 16 is coming up in a couple weeks. One of her candle lightings is for her kindergarten teacher who will be there. They have always been close- her teacher came to any shows my daughter was in all these years, they still exchange birthday cards in the mail- she is having so much trouble finding a song about a teacher to use during the candle lighting when she calls the person up to light their candle. the only one we could find was The Teacher by Crosby Still Nash and Young and she wasn't thrilled with it. A nice song saying how special she is, not like "Hot for Teacher" LOL- Any ideas??

Can you explain this tradition? I've never heard of it.

This sort of explains it- http://seshalynspartyideas.com/sweet-sixteen-candle-lighting-order-of-candles/

Basically at the sweet 16 the birthday girl calls up 16 people one by one to light a candle- its people that have meant something to the kid, the kids friends, parents etc. The child says something about each person as they call them up and as they are coming up a snippet (did I really just use the word "snippet"?!?!) of a song is played and its something special with meaning for each person. I pick the one for my daughter as she goes up to start the ceremony and its "I hope you dance"

I googled Disney friendship songs and it brought up some possibilities for you.

You'll be in my heart- Phil Collins Tarzan

You've got a Friend in Me -Toy Story

There might be others that your dd could listen to and see if they fit.

I keep thinking that older 70s song. You've Got a Friend by James Taylor

Angels Among Us. Alabama

Good luck!

How about something like Julie Andrews singing the first part of "My favorite things." In the movie, she was teaching the kids life skills.

This is commonly done at many Bar/Bat Mitzvah parties (is not a religious part) so perhaps try looking up songs for Bat Mitzvah candle lightings?

She is actually using that for the candle for the owner of the charity she volunteers with.

Then how about Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion.

<snippet>
"You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall"

Since you said that only a snippet of the song is played, To Sir with Love might work. The beginning is:

Those school girl days of telling tales
And biting nails are gone
But in my mind I know
They will still live on and on

But how do you thank someone
Who has taken you from crayons to perfume?
It isn't easy, but I'll try

I also like the idea of using something that they used to sing in class. If You're Happy and You Know It or something like that?

I have never heard of this tradition, but it sounds very moving.

Those are all great- thanks- I sent them to her, will let you know what she picks!
