That was why they were originally formed but they do (or at least say they do) contribute to other patients such as burn victims and cancer patients. They had some salons doing free haircuts at some ACS fundraisers. I assumed they wouldn't be at an ACS event taking hair if they didn't at least contribute to wigs for cancer patients.

I could be wrong, I didn't really look that deep into it.

Oh, I feel your pain! I can't imagine if my husband cut his hair! But, what a wonderful thing for your son to do and the short hair looks great on him.

My DH has donated to Locks of Love 3 times now. He is growing his hair again. He kiddingly tells people he is a "hair farmer".

Per their website, the majority of the children they sell or donate these wigs to suffer from alopecia. They do say that some of children do receive these due to hairloss from chemo and radiation. But I have heard of pediatric cancer patients being denied because their hairloss is deemed as temporary.

I think your mom and my mom were in similarly themed weddings...we had a hat downstairs just like that one, only dark green.

I was in my college roommates' wedding in 1969 - same hairdo, same hat (only it was white)

My dd9 has alopecia areata. At one point she lost around 60% of her hair though right now has most of the hair on her scalp. Locks for love specializes in vacuum wigs made from human hair. Due to the nature of vacuum wig it needs a completely bald head to stick to the head properly. The reason it doesn't work well for hair loss due to cancer is that usually once treatment ends the hair starts to grow back. Basically to wear a vacuum wig the child would have to shave the hair stubble off. Also it takes a while to go from getting proper measurements to getting a full vacuum wig so it isn't something that is ready immediately when the child may need it.

I think locks for love may help a child out who has cancer with a synthetic wig that can be worn over hair growth however I'm not positive about that. Kids with alopecia totalitis or universitalitis have no hair on there scalp so they can wear a vacuum wig. For some kids hair may eventually grow back but for many of the kids it is a long term loss. There are other medical reasons for hair loss as well. For instance if a person looses hair to a burn the hair cells usually die so hair will not regrow.

Another group very similiar to locks for love is www.childrenwithhairloss.us They provide a different type of human hair wig that can be worn over some hair. They have some premade ones to use right away for any type of hairloss and for kids who have what is more likely long term hairloss they can make a molded wig. They prefer hair at least 8 inches but if you call they may accept shorter hair to use for hairbands which essentially give the appearance of hair under a baseball cap.

Hairclub for men has a free program for kids as well but I don't know details.
