Something afoot at River Country?

Thanks for sharing. I don't make it to that brd very often. My hunch is they are just cleaning it up. I don't think it will ever be reopened. It's better to clear away the debrey's rather than letting them rott. Since it was build in the 70's, there is a good chance that some materials used have now been classified as "hazardest".

but they're not just clearing - apparently, there's also some building going on......people can see that a new roof and siding are being put on one of the buildings....so that's what's making people exceptionally curious...

It also appears that there have been permits pulled for some specific demo of certain things, but not a complete demo.

May I ask why they closed River Country?

Well, the official word was always that it was too small to handle the ever growing crowds. Also, the public's tastes were changing. People wanted bigger, better and faster water rides and slides, and Disney was losing business to Wet 'n Wild and other off property water parks. The lazy feeling of "The Ol' Swimmin' Hole", while still appealing to some, was starting to look very dated.

I think River Country could have easily co-existed with Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, but I suspect the REAL reason River Country closed was the ever-increasing bacteria levels in Bay Lake, whose waters were shared by River Country.

If you listen to the Podcast, I'm sure you're familiar with Pete's, "Stay outta the damned lakes !" That's very good advise.

I've been following this for a while. No one seems to know the exact reason it closed, but I agree with a pp that the bacteria in the lake made it too much of a liability. On another thread, someone posted that the current demolition was scheduled several years ago, however due to the hurricanes that hit 4 or 5 years ago, and Disney being self-insured, the work at RC was put off. Who knows :confused3

Anyway, if you are interested in what has become of River Country, check out this thread:

I have to warn you though...if you have fond memories of RC, you may not want to look at these. It's like a train wreck...you don't want to look, but it's hard not to.

I've heard conflicting info about whether the water was truly shared with Bay Lake, but there certainly seemed to be a high likelihood of contamination from the lake.

Perhaps they are cleaning it up from all the attention RC has been receiving from roaming eyes, etc.? :)

RC is a fraction of the size of TL and BB, and once the other two were open, I would expect that RC probably closed to capacity somewhat frequently because of it.
