Someone tried to rip me off! FRAUD!

Just got off the line to my bank. Turns out someone tried to make a purchase on a gaming store to the tune of over £950! My account is frozen, new card on the way, no access to my internet banking… virtually all my money was on that account. They say I'll have access to my online account in a short while, but until then, I'm down to my basics, money wise. Will have to be frugal!

I've had this happen to me, both virtually and in person. When my wallet was stolen, that was extra hard because it was everything. The only thing I could do was buy Starbucks because I had the app on my phone, lol. Thankfully I had a passport I could use for ID because my parents had to wire me money (I've since learned to keep a stash of cash hidden at home). I felt very vulnerable. Thankfully the fraud departments for my debit and credit cards (including my corporate card, ugh!) were super helpful. And to think at one point that was the worst thing to happen to me in 2020. 😜

Situations like yours are why it's good to sometimes have a backup credit card. Especially if you're traveling and one card gets stolen/hacked/etc., you've got another source of funds. It is very weird not having access to any of your money, even for a short while!

I’m so sorry !!! What a huge pain !!! I hope this gets resolved quickly for you!!!

also good reminder to review any overdraft setup your bank or credit union has set up on your account(s). with some it's tied to just one additional account to pull from with a maximum limit but with others it's tied to every account you have/no limit so despite only having say $500 in checking a thief can make purchase after purchase and drain every linked overdraft account.

Luckily I didn't have an overdraft on that account. And when they tried to rip me off, there was no money in the account. It was in another one. So they didn't complete their Godawful transaction.
