Someone left a bike in our yard...

since at least Saturday, it's been there. Apparently someone called the police because there was a notice in our mailbox yesterday that said they checked on the bike, it hasn't been reported stolen so we could keep it or pitch it if no one claims it. It's a nice boys bike that's a bit bigger than my son's current bike. I know it doesn't belong to anyone on our street because it's too small for anyone else. I asked my next door neighbors who have kids and they have no idea who's it is either. How long should I keep it in my yard before I "claim" it? It just seems so strange that this bike would have been left here.

Could it have been stolen and dumped there? Possibly post fliers in the neighborhood and have the person give a detailed description before you turn it over.

We found a bike once dumped in a local store parking lot. Took it to the police station and they checkd it out. Since it wasn't reported stolen we left our info and took it home. We still have it 3 years later.
I say if the police told you to do something with it, then decide what you want to do with it. Posting a flyer is a good idea however I am always leary of putting my phone number out there and who knows who will call about it. There was a found bike poster up for 3 months on the exit street to our development. I don't know if they ever got any responses or not.
A bike in the yard wouldn't last long around here though

Stick it in your garage and if anyone reports it missing the police can get in touch with you.

I think I'm going to bring it in tonight. We're going out of town tomorrow and I don't want it sitting out there the whole time. I'm keeping the card from the police that says we can keep it.

This happened to us a few months ago. It turned out a boy from several streets over had been out looking for his dog and once he found him he put the bike down and carried the dog home. It was over a week before he finally came to get the bike because he had forgotten where he left it!!

With my luck if I left it out in the yard someone would steal it! Or even in an open garage... (been there, done that and we were not happy!).
