and make me feel better.

ALSO I'd like to know what grade you saw papers like this coming home.... how old was your child? or do you teach & send work like this home--what age?

Don't you think this is WAAY to much to learn in one lesson - to be tested on during 1 wksheet/test?
My dd has had 3 or 4 of these come home - she has gotten progressively better grades, but still struggling tremendously.
Here's what's on the paper:

Exercise 1: Classify each (4 sentences here)sentence. Find Subject noun, verb, adverb, adjective, article adjective, preposition, object of preposition.

Ex 2: Use sent #3 & underline the complete subject once & the complete predicate twice & list the noun, the noun job, singular or plural, common or proper, list simple subjevt & simple predicate.

Ex 3: Underlne if the 2 words are synonyms or antonyms (6 problems here)

Ex 4: Undelrine the complete subject once & the complete predicate twice. (#7-10)
Ex 5: Underline the simple subject once & the simple predicate twice.

ex 6 : for each sentence find subject & verb & underline the 1 part of speech listed to side of sentence (adject, adverb etc)

And then there's the back side! THank goodness she doesn't do it all the same day...

I'm both a parent of overworked kids and graduate student preparing to become a teacher myself (language arts), so I hope I can be sufficiently objective.

It honestly doesn't look like a whole lot of work to me, especially if it's not due the next day. There are only four sentences, right? Are they already written out, or does the child have to write them over and over?

How old is she?

It totally looks like something my DD would bring home, on top of math, science, social studies, and whatnot.

She'll get through it! Just tackle it one problem at a time! :goodvibes

I don't have children in school yet, so I can't really help. Maybe I'm having a hard time seeing this from a child's perspective, but it doesn't seem like it would take too long to do this. If she struggles with the understanding of exactly what each item is, I could see where it might take awhile. After seeing the amount of homework my nieces and nephews have each night, they would welcome an exercise that they have a few days before it is due. Have you tried talking to the teacher to see if there is anything your DD can due to help her understanding and learning better?

no she doesn't have to write the sentences @ all. There are acutaully 18 different sentences for her to read & pick out stuff.
My issue is all the things that have to be deciphered thru. IT just seems like this should be several different lessons - tested @ different times & then maybe eventually together later on.... Like shte subject/predicate stuff should be done later than the noun verb stuff.

Just curious what grade/age would you think this is? And yes this is a public school.

I guess I"m jsut so frustated 'cause we just moved here (different state)away from one of the top schools in the nation (that got an award) & they aren't even teaching some of this stuff & certainly not testing on it!

NO NO NO it's not the time issue - it's the CONTENT of the papers..guess I dint' explain it cleary (sorry) it's all the parts of speech, etc on 1 page with 1 test grade.

I would say this is around 4th grade level work, or at least when I was in school.

Then our first grader came home with list of phrases where he had to put an exclamation point, period, or question mark at the end of the sentence.

His science work is to form a hypothesis from listed words to determine what would happen to an item mixed with another-for example-the tea dissolves in the water, the rock sinks to the bottom of the water, and vinegar mixes with water.

He has 1-2 worksheet pages of homework nightly Mon-Thurs, occasionally he has to read a book to us. I have a college degree and sometimes cannot figure out what is asked for in his homework.

Schools are definitely more aggressive here than they were 25 years ago. He is much smarter than I was at 6 years old.

I am thinking late elementary.... 4th or 5th grade.. but possibly as young as 3rd.

I understand your frustration. Kids are learning so much so soon these days.

The things I am teaching my 3 yr old preschool class are things I learned in kindergarten.

I understand why we are teaching things at an earlier age.. but I am not so sure I always agree with it.

Seems like our childrens childhoods are over by age 5 anymore.

The phonics program our school uses introduces this late 1st grade early second grade, just a few sentences at a time. They did quite a bit with grammar in 4th grade and then again in 6th grade they hit grammar hard.

Third or fourth grade is my guess. We have stuff like this all the time. Our school calls it "family work" and it usually comes home on the weekend being due the next Wednesday or Thursday. We'd have it as a review and heads up to parents on what's being taught. Personally, I like reviewing this stuff and sometimes I make more sentences to work on; we make it a game for the whole family. Does she have this kind of worksheet nightly?

My guess is 3rd or 4th grade, too. Both DSs are now in high school, but I remember them being relatively young when they were doing work like that.

I'm guessing 3rd or 4th, maybe as early as 2nd.

At our schools, they're introducing concepts really early (algebra in 1st grade :earseek: ), but they don't have to master them that early, they just need to be exposed to them.

It is SECOND GRADE!!!! :earseek: :earseek: She's only 7!!!! No she doesnt have them everyday & they aren't homework - she's been graded on them in class...I asked her to bring a book home so I could refresh myself with the definitions of predicate, etc & she said it's not in a book it's just all taught on the board.
I'm guessing this is the kind of crap that's on the standardized test & that's why they are pushing it so much (ya know they have to look good!)

I wouldn't mind so much her learning the consepts if they all weren't taught @ 1 time & if I could practice with her & then know when she's graded on things. This teacher rarely lets us know when a test is...I know when Social Studies/science tests are (but there's only been 1 of those so far) & then of course spelling weekly that we usually make an A on 'cause we study...its' this other graded stuff like these worksheets that go in the grade book & I have NO way of going over it w/her...

ANd her brain just doesn't get some of this yet....
Of course I think learning basic parts of speech are ok-though we were in late elem or early middle when we learned them. AND of course singular/plural is ok to learn now kids her age can grasp that concept & synonyms/antonyms...it's the other stuff prepositions (thats was in High School for me---I had to memorize a whole list of prepositions so I remember quite well!) & predicates - again highschool & a college english class (still have the book!!!).

I just hate that all this stuff is being cramed into them so early & there's so many kids that aren't gonna get it & they'll fall thru the cracks & get discouraged w/school alltogether - I'm already seeing it in dd....she did very well the last 2 yrs & now everything has been a struggle this year...

This year is our 1st year of letter grades & so it's kinda bad that her 1st expsoure to letter grades have been "F's".....

I would guess 4th grade and it does seem like a lot of concepts but I would assume some are review, not the first time she has seen all of this.

Interestingly, I have done a lot of research into when children learn concepts like this and how they learn and really, grammar lessons--other than complete sentences, and parts of speech as well as obvious punctuation signs and proper capitalization--dont' stick with most kids until they are in 7th grade or later and there is no evidence that kids who learn it multiple times before then fare any better than those who are exposed to it the first time at that age. Not that that is really relevant anyway as she has to do the homework, but I find it interesting at any rate.

ETA--I must have been typing at the same time as you. That seems quite a lot for 2nd grade. Why on earth does she need this info in second grade? Sillly.

My guess is they are prepping them for standardized testing.

Well, sounds like what DS got in 2nd grade. Third grade is even worse. Personally, at DS's school, we parents would say that you got off lightly w/that homework!

You would not believe some of the things they're doing. Reducing fractions to lowest common denominator. And, these kids are just learning multiplication. You explain that concept to a kid who doesn't know how to divide! I don't think we did that until at least 6th grade when I was in school!

Tonight's homework consisted of (hold onto your hats):

*2 pages (front and back) of grammar - pretty much similar to what the OP mentioned.

*2 workbook pages of math (one side ea.) - review of time and elapsed time.

*2 math worksheets (both sides). Fractions and reducing to lowest common denominator.

*Essay in religion about one of the Great Mysteries. 3 paragraphs consisting of 5 to 7 sentences per paragraph.

*Essay in Lang. Arts about Christmas. 4 paragraphs consisting of 5 to 7 sentences per paragraph.

*Science worksheet - 2 pages (thankfully, not front and back).

*History work packet on the Jamestown colony. 4 pages, front and back.

*History - create a timeline of events from when you were born to present time. Highlight each year with an important event. DS was born in Oct. 1996, so he had to do 10 yrs. worth.

Top it all off w/a reading project (diorama), assigned today. They have to pick a chapter book and have it approved by the teacher tomorrow. They have to read the book and finish the project (w/a short written report) by Dec. 19th. Uh -- like the holidays aren't crazy enough!??!

Needless to say, it took him a good chunk of the afternoon and evening to complete this.

Ugh -- but everyone has told us that 3rd grade is h@ll year!!!! It's proving to be true!

Anyway, I'm a Kdg. teacher and give nightly homework (usually a page of printing for practice or 4 math problems). I am sure some parents think "ugh, homework in Kdg.?!!?" but it's more for reinforcement. I DO NOT penalize a student if their homework isn't turned in the next day. I'd rather a parent take time to make sure their kids understand the concept than to just rush through it.

I'm shocked! I was going to say 5th grade. We do not teach prepositions of object of prep and I've never heard of a noun job. Adverbs are not taught until fairly late in third grade. Ask to see the school's published curriculum guide and see if these are skills your DD is supposed to just be exposed to or master. If it's just exposure, she should not be tested on it in my opinion.

WOW Daxx! That'a a TON! But is this a private school with religion? I guess in private school I'd expect tons of homework (don't really approve of it) 'cause after all they are "supposed" to be ahead of all public schools.

Yes, I heard 3rd grade was gonna be the hard year - w/cursive & multiplication. I jsut wasn't expecting anything difficult this year (2nd grade)yet...

If it had been homework & I could do it with her it would be one thing but it's stuff she's doing in school that I can't work w/her @ home & she's graded on it! Tonight I drilled her on everything that was on the paper - I just feel babd 'casue I just don't think she gets it all & then I lost my temeper this afternoon w/her & felt SO GUILTY! :guilty: I HATE going thru all this & to think it's gonna get WORSE! AAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHH

thanks disneymom3 -- that's what I was after---that their little brains just can't comprhend it yet....or cetainly retain it...

Yes, private Catholic school. I guess I am getting my moneys worth this year!! He's getting a great education and I'm really thrilled w/the school ... but the homework is insane at times!!! The poor kid brushed his teeth and crashed into bed once he finished. Heck -- keeps him busy, I suppose ... and away from the tv! lol! Don't get me started on cursive. The other night, he brought his writing book home and had a load of cursive to do. DH and I wonder "what the heck do they do while they're in school if they're bringing home this much homework?"!!!

Oh, well .... guess it's the experience he needs for his educational future. It won't get any easier!

I just looked up the Content Standards for West Virginia for 2nd grade in language arts related to written grammar:

RLA.2.2.7use conventions of capitalization in written composition (e.g., titles; initials; titles of written works; greeting and closing of a letter).

RLA.2.2.8 recognize and use conventions of punctuation in written composition: period (e.g., abbreviations, initials); comma (e.g., dates, greeting/closing of a letter, separate city - state- country, separate items in a list); quotation marks for direct quotes; apostrophe (e.g., contractions, singular possessives).

RLA.2.2.9 use the mechanics of grammar in written composition (e.g., correct subject/verb agreement; simple adjectives and adverbs).

RLA.2.2.10 write correctly formed and punctuated simple sentences (e.g., declarative; interrogative;
exclamation).
