1. So I was reading about not leaving anything in your car at the beaches. Is it safe to leave stuff in your car if we are doing a target stop on our way from the airport? We have a mini van so we really can't hid the suitcases. Also does Target sell alcohol? it will be a Sunday night around 5:00pm

2. Pearl Harbor. I read you can only bring in a small camera. Can you have a small camera case attached to your belt or does it have to be in your pocket. Can you carry a cell phone in your pocket also?

3. How is the weather at night? Does it cool down where you need a sweater or small jacket?

4. my daughter can not eat fish or hot dogs is there somewhere close to the giovanni's shrimp truck where we can get her something else?
We leave this Sat any advice is welcome. thanks.

We were very diligent about not leaving ANYTHING in car anywhere! My sons initially thought that I was being "a pain" but better to be SAFE THAN SORRY! My older son flew back a day earlier than we did from Honolulu airport and a young adult was in the airport security line in front of him. She commented that her wallet was stolen while on vacation and the security personnel took her aside in another area and was talking to her. That is anyone's WORST NIGHTMARE in my opinion!:scared1::scared1:

I can only speak for the US Arizona, but a bottle of water was permitted at the film before and on the little boat to the Memorial. There are NO BATHROOMS either at the film, about 25 minutes long(EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE and moving), the small ferry boat, or at the US Memorial Site. They said that cell phones were PERMITTED to be used only as CAMERAS and that all cell phones should be on SILENT. Do not remember seeing anyone with a camera, only cell phone, but as a suggestion call the US Parks and Rec number where you made the reservation for Pearl Harbor. They would be able to answer the question about cameras.

I am sure that you will find Pearl Harbor SO INTERESTING. Enjoy!:thumbsup2

We all packed either a sweatshirt or light jacket...Didn't use it at night!

I know if I leave anything in the car I will be worrying about it the whole time. so I guess a couple of the kids will have to wait in with the car while we shop. it would stink to lose all our things the beginning of the trip.

Thnaks for your your reply.

Not to sound flippant, but are people really breaking into your car in broad daylight the Target parking lot? I can understand the beach, to a certain extent. But you would think that there would be enough people walking around the Target parking lot that someone couldn't just smash your windows and then take all your luggage without anybody noticing?

An interesting question that got me wondering, because we too are visiting this Summer.

I found this interactive crime map from Honolulu police: it shows mostly car break-ins and cash thefts. If you know the address of your Target store, you can zoom in there and see what crimes have taken place. http://www.honolulupd.org/information/index.php?page=crimemapping

We would not normally leave anything valuable in a car, and would be vigilante as much as possible.

I agree you would probably be OK with your stuff in the Target Parking lot. The minivan we rented had a cover in the trunk area to hide our stuff when we were out otherwise. And yes, Target has alcohol.
We were there in early June. I don't remember needing a jacket. The breezes are wonderful.
I had my full size camera at Pearl Harbor and cell phones.

We went out to the Arizona two years ago. I took my Nikon D300 DSLR camera with no problem. I did not take a camera case with me out to the memorial.

Wow thanks for this. there have been 5 crimes within a mile radius between 6/18/2014 - 6/24/2014 that seems high. 258 in honolulu :(

1. Don't get to thinking that you are heading into the slums, just be aware that anything out and in view is an invitation for thieves. We went to the Target a few times and it felt no different than any other Target parking lot. You might have someone stay in the car just for reassurance though. (Definitely take everything with you when you go to any beach or park though. Some people just leave their car unlocked so that no windows get broken.)

Yes, Target sells beer, wine and hard liquor! We are fron Alaska, where no alcohol at all is sold outside of a liquor store, so that was amusing to us!

2. Like others have said, you can bring a camera and your phone, no cases or purses. Don't use the phone as anything other than a camera.

3. The weather was amazing, even at night! I DID wish that I had thrown my fleece in the car when we went to the Pali Hwy lookout...the wind was insane and chilly! Amazing drive and great sights, so definitely worth it.

4. Not sure about other stuff near Giovanni's. The truck on the North Shore is near other food trucks, so there may be other yummy stuff there. I would also strongly recommend the second Fumi's Shrimp place, heading east from Turtle Bay!!! We have had Giovanni's, Big Wave, and Fumi's and while they were all very tasty, Fumi's was by far the best! Perfectly cooked, garlicky but not too heavy. Giovanni's was very heavy on the butter (or oil) and left us with gut "issues" later.:rolleyes1

Hope you have a great time. We loved it so much that we are going back in October!:cool1:

Violent crime on Oahu is very low, property crime is high. I would not leave my car full of visible suitcases parked in the Target lot unless you get a parking spot right in the front near the entrance that would deter thieves.

Giovanni's is kind of off the beaten path, but there are other food trucks, and there is usually someone selling huli huli (Hawaiian style rotisserie) chicken in that area.

We were there in May for the second time (were there also in 2012) and I have to say that it's no different than being at home. I was very comfortable anywhere I went. As far as leaving things in the car? You really should never leave anything visible in any car anywhere but if at all possible, cover up the suitcases with maybe a dark throw just not to cause attention. We actually visited target while there and it was no different than being at home. Just be wary of your surroundings at all times as you should be anywhere you go :). You'll love it and enjoy!
