Some DVC members are deluded

There's a group on facebook where someone suggested everyone call or email DVC telling them we want more discounts on tickets. If enough call, maybe we'll get it. Seriously? Like they don't know members would like more discounts on tickets and members "demanding" it will make it come true?

But Sammie, the customers is always right and Disney is a big corporation that should just give me stuff because....I'm loyal...or something.

I could write a book on this subject. So many member truly don't understand how Disney the corporation operates and they don't understand what they actually bought. Some are also greedy and feel entitled.

DVC has to pay for all the perks they give to members.

A more correct statement might be that dues pays for perks given to members. DVD does pay for some items if they feel that it will benefit their marketing program.

Just looking at the comments underneath the "Celebrating 25 Years" news item on the DVC website.

A lot of people are suggesting that members should get "Free Dining"!!

Why on earth would Disney offer DVC members this??? :badpc:

You don't have to go there to see this mentality, you see it here pretty routinely. I think there are perks/benefits that are clearly unreasonable and others that would be nice and possible but to expect them is unreasonable. Someone has to pay so the costs have to be considered. From a DVC standpoint they aren't going to do anything that isn't more of a requirement that cost money unless they are getting a return. Free dining is an extreme example but when the valet parking changed there were a number of people who felt that DVC (we members) should pay for their free valet parking. I think that's actually a more egregious position than the free dining.

I want one of those tubes they use at the bank, only big enough to fit my family, and I want it to leave central PA and transport us to BWV in that same amount of time.

Someday....

Buying DVC is owning at the resort, not the parks or the restaurants (some of which are not owned by Disney). Of course, nothing in life is free and someone would have to cover the costs of any extra perks for DVC owners. That shouldn't be non-owners.

I go back to, do Marriott and Wyndham owners have this same odd expectation around additional perks other than the room they paid for? But, even outside of DVC, people have a lot of unique and bizarre expectations of Disney.

I think it all comes down to misinformed/underinformed buyers. The people who really get how DVC is structured know that looking for free dining is unreasonable. But so many people buy DVC on impulse, without understanding the finances behind it, or how timeshares work. To them, DVC is a big fancy hotel discount club, so they don't see why Disney won't give them a discount that other guests get.

Free dining requires a full price room. Have you looked at the rack rates for DVC rooms? A studio at BWV is $466 in early September. Pay that plus a ticket purchase and you can get free dining. The same standard view room is 10 points weekdays or 13 points weekends. Even if you use the rental price of $13 a point, that's only $130/$169 a night. So you are looking at about a 65% discount. That deserves free dining too?

Agreed, sadly these are the same people who also feel like pool hopping with guests and visiting TOWL with guests staying off property should be allowed. And don't get any of them started when you receive a balloon for free or better yet the resort leaves a gift in your room for a special occasion. Heads explode when any of that is ever brought up on social media.

A major benefit I would like to get is just the estoppel information sent to *** (31 days and counting).......................

I'm sure some do but it doesn't seem as many. It's really not apples to apples because of the unique park tie in and because there are a large % of DVC owners that really don't look at DVC as a timeshare but rather as owning a part of Disney. What I do see for Marriott is they often negotiate perks and discounts with local business esp restaurants, activities and local shopping. We just returned from Aruba with Marriott where the list of discounts or other perks was a full front and back page. But again it is a different situation so it's hard to compare. Bluegreen does theirs through their concierge desk as do many timeshares. I don't have as much experience with Wyndham in this area.

Actually one option that many timeshares allow is day use. Disney doesn't and given their situation likely couldn't but that position would be an easy one to see. It's like the post a few months ago something to the effect they were going to secretly and purposefully go over the occupancy but it wasn't being dishonest. Yes it is, by definition.

My neighbor used to be like this. When he found out I was a DVC member too his first response to me was "Where are all the extra perks!" Over the last few years and vacations together he's a little more aware of what he actually bought into and the savings he really is getting from it.
