I have solar panels...but I cannot really comments on the cost benefits. It is very common where I live, most everyone I know has them and it was automatically something I added to my house like a kitchen sink. When we first had it installed, I did recieve a tax benefit and I beleive a credit of some kind from our electric company...but this was several years ago. I would suggest you look into those type of credits too.
I had a friend that used them for heat on their swimming pool, it cost almost nothing and they were able to use the pool much longer than the weather usually allowed. I've lost touch with them though but do know they were pleased with the way they worked.
DaisyD~ We don't have them. I see that you live in FL, so this may be of interest to you. Two of my neighbors had solar panels which were destroyed during Wilma. Also, the panels caused serious damage to their roofs during the hurricane. The same happened to my friend's roof during Wilma, but the damage caused to her roof was even more extensive, it looks really bad. Just something to consider.
