Software to tell what settings were used when taking a photo

I read on a thread somewhere that there are some software packages out there that can be used to decode what settings were on a camera when the photo was taken.

Is that true? As I am really new to DSLR photography, I had no clue that could be done, if it can. So if it can, what is the software name?

If not, then someone fooled this newbie.

You don't need software to do this:

If you use Firefox, get the addon Exif Viewer (lots of info)

If the file is on a Windows PC, right click it and select properties then details (basic info)

If you want to view the exif of an online image you can use the following page: http://regex.info/exif.cgi for lots of info

You can also download free EXIF viewers that will give all the detail you'd ever need - check out something like Opanda's iEXIF freeware (Google search it).

Also, if you decide to get a decent editing software to edit and touch up your photos, such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, those include built-in EXIF readers.
