We were at Epcot today (Dec. 8). We'd been told that Spaceship Earth was doing soft openings to accommodate the crowd.
And they were.
We were let in to behind the hoarding in a bunch of people as we walked up. We hurried to get in, and were directed to follow the people in front.
We were thrilled to get the opportunity.
Behind the hoarding, they've done an admirable job of landscaping. Quite good, in fact. Then we went on the attraction.
First thing that you notice is a flat screen touch screen in front of you when you are sitting in your time travel car. It's showing sort of a star field effect but nothing much more than that.
The Dialogue has changed.
The Announcer is now a woman.
The speakers (at least the car were were on anyways) still suck.
All of the animatronics have received new clothing and what looks like a new paint job. Their movements seem to be more expansive and broader.
A couple of animatronics have changed around. In the radio booth the female animatronic has been removed and the dialogue has changed.
The newspaper boy was stuffed off in to a corner, but you could still hear his voice.
The Living Room Scene where the family are sitting around watching TV has been redesigned.
The Home Town Boy and the Japanese Girl scene has been removed entirely and replaced by a scene from a computer room.
Now at the Apex of the ride where the Earth is seen, where you are turned around and come down backwards, the previously mentioned touch screen comes alive and prompts you with some questions, which you answer by touching the screen.
At this point, the ride seems to be making some sort of effort to personalize 'something' to put on the touch screen, and it gives you some drab tripe to deal with, while you are still descending backwards to the Get Off point.
Everything from the Earth In the Sky Scene to where you get off has been removed and replaced by hanging LCD lights, presumably to focus your attention on the touch screen. All of the news reports, the kids in the classroom designers, the online videos (the archaeologist, the doctor and the sales person), the town and the flashing lines are all gone.
I'm hoping that they're going to do a bit more development. Well, A Lot More because whatever they've done, I certainly don't consider it an 'improvement'.
We didn't even stay to play with the computers at the end of the ride. Actually, we couldn't get out of the door quick enough.
Personally, it was A Major Disappointment. We'd always try to go on that attraction at least once or twice every time we visited. Now, unless they do a Lot of redevelopment, I'm not even going to bother going near it.
Jim.
