I need help with my sociology paper. My teacher said for our research paper we could do a survey and put it into sociological perspective. So I ask you to answer these questions. Thanks for helping!

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

6) Male or Female?

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

8) What do you consider to be true success?

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?

I'll help.

1. I absolutely think it's possible. Rare, but possible.

2. That's sort of a complicated question. I had planned to be the first female president, but clearly, that's no longer the plan. Did I think I'd be a psychologist before I turned 25? No, not really.

3. I suppose. My father had not become a principal yet (still a teacher) and my mom was a physical therapy assistant. But, in my opinion, they were still pretty awesome!

4. Absolutely.

5. As long as my family has their basic needs met and is happy, I don't care...But I guess I will, if purely based upon inflation. My husband and I will have nearly equal salaries, which was never true of my parents, so that will also be a factor.

6. Female

7. 24...so mid 20s?

8. Health, happiness, and a family that needs nothing and has their priorities straight

9. BTDT-Undergrad and grad school. I'm not sure what I need to change about my life? Don't get this question at all. Kids will change things, if that's what you mean.

10. I'm sure they probably will.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman. America is classless. You aren't stuck anywhere. So, of course you can go from poverty to wealth (or vice versa.) Happens all the time.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would? Yes.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?I'll need your definition of "status," but am guessing that the answer is "no."

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? This "status" thing is getting old. I don't see people on levels, with one being better than another, so no, no, no with the status stuff.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents? Acheive more what? More money (total sum or proportionately?) More crap in the house? More happiness? Help.

6) Male or Female? Female. :)

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35 36.

8) What do you consider to be true success? Happiness without constant worry/fear for my family.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?Yes, I went back to school to make a change. There are so many things that can force a life to be switched around: war, illness, death, income, birth, acts of God, etc. I plan for the future, but expect that when I get there it won't be what I'd planned.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?Doing more work? I don't know. I worked pretty hard when I was young. If I could rest assured that they'd be happy, that'd be more than enough.

ETA: With the update on status, I guess I have to pretty much stick with what I wrote. I don't ascribe anyone to any status. That's my view. :)

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman. I believe it is possible

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would? Yes, I have a comfortable life

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age? Yes

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? I believe my college degree opened doors for me, but it takes a solid work ethic to continue to move forward

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?Yes

6) Male or Female? Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 45

8) What do you consider to be true success? Being happy

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference? I have a BS in Marketing and an MS in MIS. I have considered continuing on to an MBA, but have not pursued it.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do? Now there's a good question. My DS17 is way smarter than I am, but he is not taking advantage of it, IMO. We are talking about college...his choices are giving me an ulcer. He has the potential to do great things, but I don't think he recognizes that.

Thanks Cool Beans and others. Status is what you perceive. For example some may think status is wealth. Others may see it as having more respect. Others see status as ascribed versus acheived meaning that you are born with certain aspects and won't escape. That is the point of my survey. I have to write a whole paper on what others see as they're status and if they think that exchange mobility or intermobilitiy is possible or do they see status as ascribed and already decided. I know that we have some really cool people from all over the world and decided instead of passing out surveys at our local grocery store, I would try and get a world view. Thanks for answering my survey.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.
Some have done this. I have enjoyed my married life in middle class America after growing up in poverty.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?
No - I have accomplished exactly what I wanted to. I wanted a college education, to be a teacher, to get married to someone who I really love, to have 2 children, and to own a home and live somewhat comfortably.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?
Absolutely - no question on that.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?
Definitely.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?
I already have. I am content with my life.

6) Male or Female? Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35
I am 60.

8) What do you consider to be true success?
Happiness - with who you are and with your relationships with others.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?
I have a Masters degree.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?
My kids are 32 and 31. One has done more than me - she is working on her Doctorate. My son is not a go-getter. He works hard, but never did finish college.

Good luck with your paper.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.
Anything is possible.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?
Never thought about it really, just did what I thought I was supposed to. Kind of still on that path.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?
Status as in more money? yes...They did not pay well back in the day.
Community status? No, my parent were more involved there.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? Yes

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents? I hope so.

6) Male or Female? Female

7) Age approxiamate? 41

8) What do you consider to be true success? Happiness with what you are now.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference? Yes, I plan on heading back to school one day.
If I could I would like to be a success at a business of my own.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do? I hope so...I am certainly trying to help them with that.
1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

I think that if you want it bad enough to work hard for it, that you can.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

No, not even close.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

Yes.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

I haven't attended college. I took a year-long intense course to become a paralegal, and I feel that has given me the confidence I needed to get where I am today. Mainly though, I think it's my work ethic. I've heard it described as "insane."

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

No way.

6) Male or Female?

Female.

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

25.

8) What do you consider to be true success?

Being happy with what you have.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

I do hope to eventually attend college, but for now I have a decent chance of becoming a store manager in my company within the next few years.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?

Oh, definitely. Wouldn't be hard. :)

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman. Yes. There are many well-documented cases of this. It is also easy to go down in status.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would? I am about where I expected to be, with the exception that I never expected to be a SAHM, or for that to even be an affordable possibility.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age? I always considered my parents middle class, though looking back I think we may have been lower middle class financially. I consider DH and myself to be middle class as well, though for many reasons DH and I are financially in a better position than my parents. My parents married and began their family in their first year of college, and struggled financially for many years. DH and I married later in life and had several years together before beginning a family. We also were both college graduates working in professional fields.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? I believe a college education was a major factor in maintaining a middle class status. Otherwise I would probably not have had a very satisfying career nor made as much money as I did.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents? I expect to be more satisfied with my life. I expect to be happier in my marriage, to spend more time with my children and enjoy them more than was possible for my parents. I expect to be able to provide my children the same college opportunity my parents gave me.

6) Male or Female?Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35 40-45

8) What do you consider to be true success?Happiness. Satisfaction with how your life turned out.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference? I did attend college twice. The first time I got a degree in a field that offers no opportunities unless you get an advanced degree, and I was not interested in that. I then worked in low-end office-type work, then went back to college on my own dime, and achieved a degree in a field that made money. After more than 10 years in that field, I no longer wanted to do that kind of work, and wanted more than anything to stay home with my two little boys. DH and I were fortunate in being able to make that happen eventually.

DH and I have tried to mitigate any unforeseeable financial disasters in our financial planning. Our health certainly is one major factor. A divorce would likely drastically change things as well, particularly for my financial outlook (since I am currently a SAHM, and my career was in technology.) A little over a year ago I quit my job to become a SAHM, and that required major adjustments to our financial planning, but surprisingly little to our current lifestyle, which is not extravagant by any means. I never expected to want to be a SAHM, so that one kind of came out of the blue for us. :)

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do? I expect my children to go to college, and they are being raised with that expectation. Not that we are hammering them about it (they're only 6 and 2), we just talk about college as part of school in general. We are saving for their college now, and my hope is that they will choose fields that make them happy and hopefully allow them to make enough money to live on and plan for their future. So I guess to answer the question, I see them achieving the same level of success, perhaps more, than we have.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

Yes I do.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

Yes

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

Yes

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

Yes, I dropped out of high school in the 10th grade and had a income small enough that I qualified for food stamps when I had dd. I am now 11 classes away from my masters. Yep, I think college had a lot to do with it!

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

Yes

6) Male or Female?

Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

34

8) What do you consider to be true success?

A true sense of pride in your life and your accomplishments

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

Yes, I plan to continue to go to college. I don't think anything is going to happen that might make my life different without me earning it myself. I don't have any rich relatives LOL

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?

Absolutely!

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.
Yes.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?
As a mother, a wife and as a person yes. Professionally, I don't know that I ever really envisioned anything clearly so no.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?
My mom at 29 was teaching and had only been married a year and I was still a year away. My dad at 29 had moved 600+ miles from where he had grown up, was well-employed, had been married 3 years and had become my dad. So if status mean your standing in the family then yes - I do feel like more of a matriarch than my mother would have at my age. Financially, not so much. We definately live differently than they did at our ages.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? No.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents? Yes in some areas (bringing in $), no in others (work-life balance).

6) Male or Female? Female

7) Age approxiamate? 25-30

8) What do you consider to be true success? Inner-peace

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?
Not presently planning on going back for additional schooling. Finding plenty of new ways to grow and learn outside of academia by just living life and showing my girls the world and hopefully teaching them a little something about what's really important.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?
If that's what makes them happy then yes!

need help with my sociology paper. My teacher said for our research paper we could do a survey and put it into sociological perspective. So I ask you to answer these questions. Thanks for helping!

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman. No I don't. I know there are people who have done this, but I think they are in the minority.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?Absolutely. DH and I have worked very hard to be where we are now.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age? It depends, My parents lived in a small town where you did not need as much as you would in a large city like I live in.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? No. I don't have a college degree or my DH. However, that will be a priority for my kids.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents? Yes,

6) Male or Female? Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35 36

8) What do you consider to be true success? My DH and I in a happy marriage, my kids happy, everyone healthly. Having some money does make life easier, and I won't deny it. But if you are not happy personally it won't matter how much money you have.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference? My DS is 4 and I have thought about going back to college when he starts school. Although if I went back to school I would get my teaching degree so I don't know how that would effect me finacially since teachers don't make too much. I think the only difference right now would be for me and DH to continue to work toward growing his business.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do? Of course. Like every parent, I want my children to go to the moon!

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

Definitely possible, but unlikely IMO.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

No, I am right about where I thought I would be. I had high expectations for myself though, so it isn't like I've stagnated or feel like I'm not accomplished.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

Yes

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

Yes

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

Yes

6) Male or Female?

Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

33

8) What do you consider to be true success?

Happiness with the decisions you have made, contentment at the place that you are in life.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

I did attend college, it defintely enhanced my potential, not only salary-wise either. Having children, death of spouse, acts of God, wars, etc can all change my "status".

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?

I hope so. I'm happy with my life and I feel successful, but I will always want more for my kids by virtue of being their mother. I think realistically they will probably live in a similar income bracket and status level.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman. YES, happens ALL the time, not rare at all
2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age? I think we have about the same status--not sure what you mean by "status' though

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? YES

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents? ME, no but not because of any societal things, my Dad is just a very accomplished person, DH has surpassed what his parents were able to accomplish

6) Male or Female? F

7) Age approximate? ie 30-35 40-45

8) What do you consider to be true success? being happy with what you do and what you have

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference? I already have a college degree

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?
YES

Just a suggestion for future use, your questions are very general and vague. If you need to do something like this again, you need to ask very specific questions and define things like "class" and "status" because they can mean very different things here. In my case I took status to mean standing in your community but after reading it again I THINK you mean financial status.

Hope this helps - good luck with your paper.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

Yes

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

Yes

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

Yes - but it's close

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

Yes
5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

Yes - but again it's close

6) Male or Female?

Male

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

51

8) What do you consider to be true success?

That fine balance between the ability to be happy with what life hands you and the ability to be just dissatisfied enough to work hard to do more.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

I have enough degrees - I don't plan on getting any more. May still take course for enrichment though.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?

If you mean achieving more and having a higher status - probably not. But there is nothing wrong with that. It's not a function of society failing them. If each successive generation does "more" than the previous one, eventually it will level out for any given family.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman. Yes, absolutely. The only people who can't are people who believe they can't, IMO

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would? No, I never had a limit for myself

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age? No, probably equal amount of status

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? Didn't attend college, but I am sure it would have changed my status in the eyes of some

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents? Sure, if I want to

6) Male or Female? Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35 40

8) What do you consider to be true success? Contentment

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference? Not sure I want my life to change

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do? I see my children doing different things. I think they can do or be whatever they set their minds to

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

Yes. My parents were poor and struggled for many years. My inlaws did not graduate high school. My husband and I both are working on Masters degrees and are making a combined income of over 6 figures.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

Yes.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

Definitely! We have more than both sets combined.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

Without a doubt, although I think that motivational levels and work ethics are also important to take into consideration.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

We already have.

6) Male or Female?

Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

30-35, husband 36-40.

8) What do you consider to be true success?

Achieving my career goals (to be CNO at a hospital someday), working on a phD, my children being more successful than my husband and I.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

I am currently working on a Masters degree, MSN. I will be working on the MBA next.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?

Yes! I know they have free will and will make mistakes in their lives, but they also know how important education and choosing the right career is.

See bolded responses above.

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

I KNOW you can.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

Yes and no. I always knew (or had a strong feeling) that I would, but I always think there's more I can or could have done.

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

Yes.

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

I did not attend college. I DO believe that education never ends if you wish to be successful. That doesn't always mean formal education. In many cases, IMHO, college is not cost-effective and is more "brainwashing" than practical education.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

Yes.

6) Male or Female?

Yes. Any gender can achieve greatness in America. (just kidding - I know you're looking for MY gender). Male.

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

30's

8) What do you consider to be true success?

Financially stable, loving family, healthy lifestyle, positive attitude.

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

Did not attend college. At the recommendation of a mentor, a specific author opened my eyes and made me think differently.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?
I have no children.

6. Male

7. 30-35

1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.

Absolutely! DH & I went from barely making ends meet to living a very comfortable lifestyle. It had NOTHING to do with ANY politician. We were smart enough to further our educations and leverage our assets.

2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?

Yes!

3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?

Define status?

4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status?

For me, no. I never finished. I own a small business and am a partner in a quickly growing company.

5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?

Hard to say. I think that's too subjective to adequately answer.

6) Male or Female?

Female

7) Age approxiamate? ie 30-35

45

Being happy--loving what you do for a living--and financially secure. (Not necessarily wealthy, just secure.)

9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?

I will not re-enter college. For the most part any major change will be something beyond my control.

10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?
