Soarin'...for chickens?

If you are the type of person who wont look out an airplane window at take-off until its at cruising speed, then you wont like Soarin'. That's me. I tried, but the swooping over the mountains just did me in. But all I needed to do was close my eyes and I could experience the wind and gentle rocking and smells, so I will go again, just with eyes closed.

I would try it. It's just a beautiful ride, and such a safe, peaceful way to really feel like you can fly. DD10 does not ride thrill rides of any kind, and she loves Soarin', and would ride it again and again.

On the other hand, FIL has serious fear of heights, went on it once, and will not do it again. He knew he wasn't far off the ground, but the sensation is very realistic and it did bother him.

You know yourself best, but Soarin' is a much easier ride than Goofy's Barnstormer, even, and if you go on that you'll most likely be OK.

i'm a chicken.. and i love this ride! my children love this ride! it's so peaceful and beautiful as if you're flying. i have to say, this might be my favorite ride at epcot!

First and foremost, Soarin is an INCREDIBLE ride.

My DS (10) is petrified of heights, roller-coasters and all things motion simulated. Soooooo, it took us 3 tries going through the line before we actually got him on the ride! The first time, we got in our seats and strapped in. I looked over and could tell he was not wanting to be there. I flagged down the CM and asked to get him off. She was extremely nice and told my DH and I that when the ride was over she would let my DH ride it with our DD. Anyway, we ended up going through a third time and he made it. HE LOVED IT!! We had to ride it again before we left.

You will enjoy it I am sure.

My sis gets motion sickness very easily too. (As in she even gets it on the Ellen/Universe of Energy Ride!) She does OK on Soarin' though...I think there is one part where she closes her eyes, but is fine otherwise.

I'm a major ride chicken myself--even the Barnstormer is too much for me!

That being said, I love Soarin'! I would think that anyone except those with the MOST extreme cases of motion sickness would be fine. The vast majority of the ride's feeling of motion is based on the movie, not the actual ride system's movement. The actual movement is very, very tame. So if you did start to feel a little bit "off" you could close your eyes and be fine. I actually spent the first half of my first ride on Soarin' with my eyes closed, but when I opened them up I had a blast! Now I'm not as afraid, and it's wonderful.

I will say that if you have a problem with motion sickness when watching IMAX movies, then this ride is not for you. Essentially the movement is very slight, but the IMAX movie makes it seem like you're soaring. If the movie itself bothers you, then I probably wouldn't do it.

Hope that helps!

I get motion sick on many, many rides. I am not afraid of any of them. Soarin' is a very pleasant ride and is mild. BUT there are two spots that get me on the verge of being sick. The first one is in the Yosemite shot when the hanglider turns. This one is short. Toward the end is a shot of Navy ships in San Diego Harbor and the camera tilts sideways on a long swooping shot. You may want to close your eyes for 4-5 seconds when you see the ships.

I have the same problem at these spots, and also the nighttime footage. I always close my eyes while they are flying over the freeway and tell DD to tell me when we get to Disneyland!!

I love SOARIN'!

How high does the bottom row go? And can you exit without actually getting in the glider?

I get very motion sick. I can't do the teacups. I finally tried Dumbo this last trip, and I can finally do rides like that, but only once. I can't do simulator rides. I freaked out at the thought of riding Mission Space and exited the ride. Ellen's Universe of Energy (I think that's the name) made me sick. I rode Soarin, and I was very excited to do so. However, I will be completely honest. I was really scared to see that the only thing holding you in is a seatbelt. I felt very unsafe. Until we took off. Then it didn't bother me at all, and it was great. My 8 and 5 year old weren't bothered either. The older one thought it was a little boring. But, we loved it.

Thsnk you all for your replies. I can't wait to try Soarin' I hope that my family enjoys it as much as you all do!!!

Thanks!

Yes. That nightime footage at the end is a bit bumpy and is sped up so the bumpiness is exagerated. But I have to keep my eyes open because the next shot is so good. :thumbsup2

Add me to the list of those who felt queasy but still think it's worth a try. I had my eyes squeezed shut almost the entire time.

(and I love rollercoasters! :rolleyes1 )

my wife and MIL love soarin and are totally scared of heights. Absolutely amazing ride.
