I want to refinish my basement floor. It has VERY ugly indoor/outdoor carpet that was stained terribly by the previous owners (well, by their dog anyway!!) But I don't know what to change it TO. The basement is completely finished--there's a laundry room, office, family room, bedroom, and storage. I don't care about the storage area. But I do care about the rest. Whatever I put down here has to be easy to clean, but it needs to be "warm and inviting."

Any suggestions?? Oh, BTW, I can't afford something like Pergo (although I would LOVE to have that!!) Basement is dry too.

My basement is 140yo so there is dirt and cement...but if you are wondering about an inexpensive easy thing to put on the basement floor...go with peel and stick tiles. You can add a bound carpet at any time over it, but if your basement is too dry for Pergo, I think the peel and stick tiles would be nice and cool. There are so many types on the market now, and you can do some nice designs...like a boarder. Good Luck

We have tile floors throughout the entire house. Makes for really cold winters, but you can always throw down a nice area rug. We like the tile floors down there because just recently, we had a leak in the bathroom down there and it went several days before someone caught it. The entire basement has a nice 1/4 inch covering of water. The squeegy took care of the mess. Had there been carpeting, it would have been a nightmare.

Berber carpet, nothing too exciting. A friend has a cork floor in her basement and I thought that was something different. You can buy cork tiles (they are specifically for floors) and install them yourself.

About the laminate flooring, the cost of the material isn't really any more then putting in carpet the labor costs is what gets you so if you can install the flooring yourself, it could actually be LESS expensive then putting in carpet. Check around and get some prices.

I think it's cement, but there's so much crap piled up in our basement its sometimes hard to tell what is under it all! :teeth:

We ripped out the carpet (red shag) and put down inexpensive ceramic tiles. We did it ourselves for surprisingly cheap.

We have some kind of non-descript gray tile, which is fine because our basement is a HUGE mess and not finished at all.
