So, tell me where you fly from for cheap fares.

I just started checking fares for a possible trip to Orlando before Christmas. WestJet is about 3 grand for a family of 4! (From Halifax.) Air Canada is worse, of course. Little luck checking Sunwing and Canjet, maybe I need to be checking at a different time?

I looked at Southwest from Manchester NH, about $1100 US, but we still have to get to Manchester, about 10 hrs from here in Eastern NS. Do-able, but if I'm doing that drive, I thought I could do better than $1100.

Any hints, prior experience, etc?

Thanks,

JoAnne in NS

You could try Allegiant Air http://www.allegiantair.com/out of PORTSMOUTH NH (Free Parking )they fly to sanford but where listing a fare of 926 us for 4 You may consider bangor me it is 4 hrs closer and around 1,200 us I youse several sites to compare prices www.expedia.ca ( prices in CDN $ )and www.kayak.com
we are flying from bangor in sept because we can get home on the day we leave orlando

Thanks, I'll have a good look at that tomorrow when I'm more awake.

Burton, huh? My SIL lives in Burton, we go up every few months.

You are welcome. I have relatives in NS but mostly in the valley and around Digby .

We flew Canjet from Halifax this spring - they had the best prices by far - about $450-$500 per person return.

I will keep them on my list, and check. Thanks for the tip! There are so many discount carriers now I never know which ones are relevant...

We flew Canjet this year in May - never again! Now I understand why the prices were a little bit cheaper. I'm hoping West Jet or Air Canada will have a seat sale out of Halifax for next year. Canjet? Never again. :sad2:

We didn't have a problem with Canjet - the service was great. I'm curious about what went wrong with your flights.

Bangor is 292.00 US, round trip for November! That is with Delta. I am going Nov 1 - Nov 16th,
06. I think it is a good rate!

Just to give you the highlights-there was one rude flight attendant each way
(not to me but to another passenger) ,before boarding in Orlando the attendants didn't even seem to know what they were each suppose to be doing, check in at both Halifax and Orlando was (how shall I put it nicely) not as smooth as I care for. I didn't bother complaining to anyone or anything; I just figured it was a learning experience and will fly with Air Canada and West Jet from now on. One example of the rudeness - a flight attendant told one of the passengers (not very nicely) "I don't have time for that right now!"

I've done Continental from Manchester for $800 Cdn last year and paid $942 Southwest this year for 4 of us. $1,100 US is on the high end. Since the SW dates haven't opend up yet past October, I'm assuming your comparing summer rates. You shouldn't need to pay more then $220 US pp.

In Boston, Jet Blue (www.jetblue.com) is another carrier which should get you there far less than $1,100. Of course, the big airlines have more direct flights.

Finally, don't forget about the ferry from Yarmouth to Portland. Not sure on cost, but Portland's only 2 hours from either Boston or Manchester or Bangor.

A final thought. I'm in Southern New Brunswick, near the border, and it nearly trakes me 6 hours (including stops) to get to Manchester. Unless your taking the Digby ferry to Saint John, I don't see how you can do it in 10 hrs.

We went with Canjet for our Sept30-Oct7 trip. We only paid $650 round trip, so I'm willing to put up with some minor rudeness. We bought our tickets too late to get a better price.

The reason you may be having issues is that Canjet only sends out one flight a week at certain times of the year. They also don't do a direct Orlando-Halifax flight off-season. We are doing a stop over at Ottawa.

So if you can leave and come back on a saturday, go with Canjet and save some money.

We're almost in Cape Breton, so driving to Yarmouth is a major detour. And my dh would rather be behind the wheel than "stuck" on a ferry! (Understandable if you've lived on Newfoundland or Vancouver Island, and we've done both!) We drove to Boston last year in about 10 hours--ok, that's 10 hours of *driving* , not 10 hours on the road--with 2 little kids it was a lot more. From the map, looks like Manchester is close to Boston.

Curious to hear about Logan for anyone who's been through Boston, I heard it was a nightmare to drive to.

Really great ideas and things I hadn't thought of, everyone, thanks.

Had to laugh about bad service on Canjet. We have had such terrible service from Air Canada over the years, we would be surprised by anything else! (Love Westjet, though like others we're stuck with AC for a while until we use up our AP points.) Have to say, though, the AC Halifax airport staff and the Halifax-based flight crews we encountered this time around were the best I've had in a long time.

Is there any reasonably priced gateway out of Maine? Probably not.

 All these years I thought Eastern NS was the Yarmouth end.

And yes, I've lived all my 36 years in the Maritimes.

Ferry only runs in summer. Bummer, as we're also traveling from Halifax in December and the ferry would put lots of airports into the picture. I can't see driving for 10 hours or more just to get to an airport. But oh those fares from Halifax hurt.

Oh, and the ferry is also a major chunk of cash if you're taking a vehicle. High season rates Yarmouth to Portland about US $150 for car, $100 a person for the ferry. So that kind of eats up any savings anyway. No way around it, we pay plenty to get out of Nova Scotia!

Logan is not that hard to get to all you have to do is follow the signs from I 95
you take exit 46 rt 1/129 after about 14 miles you exit right on to rt 60 , At roundabout, take the THIRD exit onto SR-60 [Squire Rd] (RT-60 / Revere / Sumner Tunnel) , At second roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto SR-60 [American Legion Hwy] Keep LEFT onto SR-1A [Lee Burbank Hwy]after a couple of min logan should be on your left .( alow lots of time as the airport itself can be a bit confusing ( has been under construction for years ) )
