So sad about Japan

The more I read and the more images I see the more heartbroken I am over what the poor people in Japan are going through. An incredible earthquake, then the tsunami and now radiation... nothing makes me feel less significant on this planet then an act of nature. I hate that I feel so powerless so far away when I know so many people are suffering

They just reported that 180 people are now suffering from radiation sickness due to exposure while trying to cool the reactor prior to the explosion. This is a horrible situation and it could get worse.

The people of Japan need our support now, but they will be needing it for a long time in the future. This is not something they will be able to overcome right away.

They are now starting to pass out iodine pills to people in the area of the reactor to help protect them from radiation exposure.

KI ( Potassium Iodide) will only protect you from radioactive iodine. It does not protect you from other kinds of radioactive material. It works very well to protect your thyroid gland. However, it protects only your thyroid, not other parts of your body so these people are at high risk to develop problems from their exposure. This is why I am so against nuclear power. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes can all impact power plants and cause nuclear emergencies.
