Hi Guys, First off let me say I am excited for my DD who is 17 and going to England with friends from here to meet up with friends from there (that she made at camp) but I am scared to death and clueless. What type of money should I give her? Should I open up a charge card for her to use while touring or should we get travelers checks? She will be staying with friends in Dorms & Hostles, one hotel. Also while I have your attention. How cold is it? She is leaving on Feb. 13 and staying till Feb 28th, 2007. I'm getting her a phone so at least I can get in touch with her. Renting one from Verizon. Thanks, That's all for now but I'm sure I'll be back. Gina

Don't be frightened. At 17 I'm sure she'll be able to look after herself and the fact that she's with friends rather than alone should make her safer. Just remind her to take the same safety precautions that she would at home.

As for money I'd be inclined to use traveller's cheques as they are replacable if they are lost or stolen, but she will have to be near a bank to get them changed, I've not seen them used directly in shops over here as they are in the US (but someone may contradict me on that).

February is probably the coldest month over here but the weather has been very changeable lately with daytime temperatures anywhere from 34 to 48F and nighttime around about freezing - but it will depend on whereabouts in the country she is visiting.

I'm sure she'll have a great time.

Great to hear your DD is visiting us here :) As for money if she has an ATM card that will work well here as long as it has the Cirrus/Visa/Mastercard/Maestro logo. Traveller's Cheque are not as widely accepted here as they are in the US as a straight forward 'cash transaction' but we do have a lot of banks that would exchange and I am guessing it would be best to bring in UK pounds £. As for temperature where will DD be staying as even in such a small area we can have quite a variation in temperatures.

OK, We went to the bank to get her a ATM/debit card and checking account and they wouldn't let us because she isn't 18. AGGGHHHH back to square one.

Oh thats a shame about the ATM card as we can get them here alot younger :(

Claire ;)
