when you run?

my friend and i have been walking about 3 miles, 3-5 days per week for years. we have just started to jog for small lengths of time within our walk. our trouble is breathing... both of us seem to "give out" of breath before our body is tried. so does anyone have any suggestions?

Rhythmic breathing is your answer. Here is a link to a site that talks about it and the 3:2 ratio. I am so used to it, it is hard to explain how to do it. Sometimes if I get off rhythym, I have to count in my head until I get back on track.

Good luck, you will get the hang of it in no time!

Great recommendation Veronica.

I also have used swimming the crawl stroke to get more capacity for when I was increasing my trekking speed. It is a great XT and helped me along with the technique Veronica advised.

I try to remember to breath from the diaphragm. Man people only breath with a portion of their lung capacity.

I look at breathing a lot like running form. It is easy to fall back into bad form because you aren't paying attention but when you straighten up and land correctly you start to spring forward. That same attention has to be paid to the breathing. I find myself all the time, especially on long runs, just slumping the shoulders a bit and breathing shallow. I have to consciously concentrate on the form and breathing for a bit and I feel much better.

I also remember when I first started running that my lungs gave out way before my legs did. That is just down to conditioning and the increased VO2 capabilities will come from training.

Good luck.:thumbsup2

i think this is me to a T!! my breathing is shallow and gives out long before my legs do. i think i just don't know that correct form.

thanks for all the great advice. hopefully i will be doing one of those WDW marathons one day;)

You're supposed to breathe when you run? Who knew??

Just kidding... I have asthma and have learned that good posture (shoulders back and down, chin more up than down, chest "open") really helps to fill my lungs, as well as thinking about breathing from my diaphragm. I also learned that I have to stay really well hydrated or my breathing suffers.

Good luck, and we'll see you at a race for sure!

Huh. I had never really thought about it. So, yesterday, during my run, I paid attention to my breathing. I breath about 12-16 times per minute when running (less during a true long slow run, and maybe as much as 24 during the latter stages of an interval workout). My cadence is somewhere between 160 and 170 steps per minute, so I breathe (full inhale and exhale) every 10-13 steps.

(There is, of course, the chance of bias - I may have been trying to breathe more deeply than usual or something, but my resting respiration is pretty low, too.)
