and it came on at 7:30 and is on till 11pm. Thats 3 1/2 hours.
If my elementary school math is correct.....3 1/2 - 2 1/2 means there is an hour of commercials

ABC Family always has so many commercials for its movies, I think more than any other network.

Oh well, that means an hour of channel surfing

It's not just ABC Family or the movies. If you see a TV show that's normally a half hour on TV but then watch the DVD version, it's usually only 22 minutes long.

I didn't watch the movie tonight, but ABC Family usually shows the extended version of the Harry Potter movies. They usually play deleted and extended scenes. So that could also add to the extra hour of the movie.

So, eight minutes of commercials per half hour... times seven half hours equals 56 minutes. DARNED close to an hour.

I LOVE my DVR. I'll set the movie to record, do something else for an hour, and then fast forward through all the commercials!

A typical hour of OTA broadcast prime-time television has 18 minutes of commercials (including public service announcements), or about 30%.* A half-hour program typically has 8 minutes of commercials (again, including public service announcements), or about 27%. First-run programs on cable networks tend to be about the same.

Of course, it could be cut, but the theatrical running-time from HPatSS was 152 minutes, and for the extended version, 159 minutes. Using the lower number would put ABC Family's presentation as about 27.6% commercials, which is actually pretty low for a program that runs an hour or more.

If they presented the extended version of the film, as ashleybea speculated, then it would have only been 24.2% commercials, which is remarkably low.

* In addition, there are in-show brand appearances, known as product placement, but that varies widely. However, there are no product placements in Harry Potter movies AFIAK.

Also they do add in the deleted scenes on the ABC Family channel. I love seeing those mixed in with the movie!

ABC Family also adds in deleted scenes into the movies while they're airing them, so that might be why it's a bit longer, too.
