So are higher airfares and gas prices affecting your travel plans?

Will you drive if the airfares go up enough, or stay home, or just take a deep breath and reach farther into your wallet? Just curious what everyone's thoughts are!

I've been debating with myself over this. It's sooo much easier to fly, but I'm really struggling to accept that I'll have to pay almost $300 apiece to do it. I've adding up the costs of flying (airfare and car rental) vs. driving expenses (gas and hotel 1 night each way). On the surface driving appears to be cheaper. However, figuring in the 4 days driving time vs. what $$ is earned by working those days instead of driving, flying comes out ahead. I think. I'm not even sure anymore. :confused3

Nah, in all honesty it's not that much difference. The airfares are no higher now than they were 4-5 years ago. It's all cyclical.

We have fairly energy efficient cars that get around 35mpg on average. We've been talking about gteting a hybrid for a couple of years now, although general conservation as opposed to gas prices are what's driving that conversation.

Personally airfares are going up much slower the my local gas tank. At this rate I can't see how it will be cheaper to drive.

I drive a fairly fuel efficient car, but still last night it cost me $30 to fill it up!

I just checked AirTran's website. I can now fly non-stop roundtrip from FNT to MCO for just under $143! Now, where's my DH when I need him?? :Pinkbounc

I wish I could find the great airline prices that the rest of you keep seeming to find. I am going crazy right now because I can not find a round-trip ticket for less than $400 for our dates June 17th-26th from Seattle to Orlando. And this includes Southwest. I really want to fly Alaska because they have non-stop flights to Orlando (the only airline that does out of Seattle) and today I checked prices (I am checking every day, several times day) and now tickets are over $500 regardless of what time of day we fly. Uugghh. I am ready to scream. I need to buy these tickets ASAP, but the thought of paying this much is killing me. I couldn't buy tickets until recently (2-3 weeks ago) because my husband's leave hadn't been approved yet by the Coast Guard (it has now) and I have learned my lesson that you DO NOT buy airline tickets until the Coast Guard has approved his leave. I have gotten burned too many times and my burns have been very costly. Any chance there is going to be a price war soon? I have never never had to pay this much for airline tickets. And I have to buy 7 tickets. :sad2:
