I read in the Shore Excursion Information that snorkel equipment is available for rental on Castaway Cay. Is it possible to bring your own and still be able to explore the trails? My DD just got new snorkel gear, and has been practicing in the pool. She really wants to take her own. Thanks.

Don't forget to bring the Cheeze Whiz though. When we snorkeled on CC I saw people of that cheese in a can. The fish went WILD. It was a little gross but the fish ate it right up. Warning to you - I had only snorkeled once before CC. I learned real fast but it was a long swim to find Mickey underwater. I had to basically float a little to rest - kind of scary for the not-so-comfortable-not-being-able-to-touch-bottom wimps of the world.

Just an FYI about the cheez whiz stuff. I have read other posts about using this, and was thinking about using this at one time to feed fish while snorkeling. From all that I could gather it was not healthy for the fish to be eating this stuff...

That's funny when you think about it. I wouldn't eat it nor would I let my kids eat it. You're probably right and I wouldn't bring it myself. Don't know if it's safe either. I'm creeped out by fish anyway.

good point....
the stuff to see (the stuff that disney has put in the water to look at) is a very long swim to get to........
someone should go with your daughter when she goes out there...
(as a former lifeguard i still don't ever go out that far by myself.....it's a hard rule in my family....no solo swimming ever, whether or not there are lifeguards)....

besides the stuff that disney's put in the water, the snorkeling at the family beach isn't all that interesting.....there's no coral or anything like that to look at.....i didn't snorkel at the adult beach so i don't know if that was any better or not...

(take this with a grain of salt.....we live near a coral reef, so our expectations were probably higher than the norm)...

The snorkeling at the adult beach was fantastic because there was hardly anyone in the water to kick up sand and make it cloudy. We saw LOTS of colorful fish, much more than we saw at the family beach.
My advise to people with kids that are going to snorkel at the family beach, GO OUT EARLY before it's busy. I didn't even get to see the Mickey because I literally couldn't see through the water it was so cloudy from all the people in the water.

that sounds like the place to be.

Wow thanks for all the advice. I didn't even think about it getting really crowded and being cloudy in the water. And Kim you are not alone with your "not-so comfortable-not touching- the-bottom," issue. I will certainly take that into account. Don't worry Disneyholic Family, as a former lifeguard myself, I would never let her solo swim. (Long or short swims.) I'll fess up, I've been in the pool with her with my new snorkeling gear, practicing up as well. Its amazing how exciting looking at the leaves on the bottom of the pool has been! What must the neighbors think?!

Thanks for the tip on the adult beach. DH and I will have to take a look.

Thanks Everyone!!!:earsgirl:

How nice is the rented gear on the island? Is it really beat up? I'm not expecting professional equipment or anything, but I went snorkling with rented equipment once (not DCL) where the masks were leaking, the fins torn, etc.... Fortunately, I was able to use some gear from another guest who had brought their own from home.

Hey Disney Family,

Very Good!! Ha Ha!!!! (Inside Joke)

The Chief will get you back!!!:smooth:

Just a thought, but why don't you rent a float and bring it out with you? If/when she/you got tired you could just lie on the float and put your face in the water.

My husband took my daughter out. She is 6, they stayed pretty close to shore. However, I took a little trip out myself around the entire roped off area. Took me about 1/2 hour. I had my own fins, mask and snorkel.

Since my husband and I are scuba divers, and are used to coral reefs and wrecks, it is a little blah, but they did have some schools of fish and I did get to see the Mickey Statue. Wish I brought the camera with me, but hubby said that I shouldn't even bother. Oh, well, just one more excuse to go again!

We brought our own snorkeling equipment. We LOVED snokeling at CC. We were amomg the first off the Ship and spent several hours. The water was crystal clear and we saw lots of different fish. we also encountered 2 large sea turtles. I would go as early as possible, before the sand gets kicked up...

We just returned from the Wonder cruise and what a great time we had. Just wanted to pass along a tip for Castaway Cay. I had read about taking cheese whiz to feed the fish. Well I had brought some pretzels with us and took some in my hand as we used the rental floats to get out into the water. My hand with the pretzels was dangling in the water as we swam out. To my surprise, the fish came up and tried to get them out of my hand. My daughter freaked and I screamed until I realized they weren't going to hurt us. We sat on the floats and tossed pretzels (and bread we had taken from the lunch BBQ). There must have been about 20 fish around us, about 6 inches long, in colors that ranged from tan to blue and yellow. You could touch them and let they glide though your hands. We even had a two-foot fish come up. They aren't shy but won't hurt you either. It was quite an experience. Many others shared our fish food and enjoyed it too.

Just a question about the cheese idea to attract the fish...

Is it Cheese Whiz or is it the cheese in the can that sprays out ?? I would imagine it would be difficult to get cheese whiz out of the jar since you usually use a spoon or a knife?? Just curious

Spray cheese is so processed that it's barely food for humans, let alone fish. There are plenty of fish to be found at both beaches, so I would not worry about bringing a fish attractant of any kind. As others have mentioned, there is no coral, because it would be killed by people stepping on it, just like most of the coral in, say Trunk Bay on St. John. Still, it was a lot of fun to snorkel in both spots. Be sure to check out the map of the snorkel trail so you know where to go. We just got into the water and ended up having to zig-zag across the area to see everything.

The snorkel equipment at CC seems decent, and is sanitary. We chose to buy our own masks and snorkels, however. The main thing this gets you is a good mask fit. Seawater stings if you get it in your eyes, so you want to find a mask that doesn't leak. Having your own snorkel is nice because you can get a "dry" snorkel with a flap that closes when you submerge. That means you can just breathe normally after surfacing, without the need to "clear" the tube. Worth $20 to me. There's no reason to get your own fins, because they take up a huge amount of room in a suitcase. You can rent fins at CC for $7-8 a pair, without getting the whole package. Have fun!

Maybe it's just me, but I think I'd shudder if a lot of people started feeding the fish with cheese whiz or otherwise. The snorkling area isn't that huge and all that gunk is going to wash around you while you're swimming. It sounds yucky. Also, the thought of attracting lots of fish makes me think of attracting certain other fish who like to eat them. And fish can get aggressive (the do have teeth). I'd say be careful about this and certainly to the courtesy of others limit the cheese whiz.
