Snorkeling at Adult Beach/Castaway Cay

I'll be going on my first cruise August 14 (thanks to my WDW CM daughter) and would like to know about snorkeling at the adult beach on Castaway Cay. Mainly, how deep is the water; how strong is the tide. I am not a good swimmer and I don't know if I'd be comfortable if it's just me and Old Man Sea! Any other tips about Castaway Cay would be greatly appreciated, too! I can't wait!

The beach is called "Serenity Bay" for a reason. The water is very calm, and stays shallow for quite a way out from the shoreline. It's really more like a big, warm salt-water lake than the ocean. There's a reef a ways out from shore, which breaks the water. Threre's not much current or tide to speak of. I think it's a great place to try snorkeling.

the water depth varies with the tide.

if the winds are strong, the undertow picks up, but nothing you can't manage if you are a good swimmer.

If you make the plunge and try a bit of snorkling at Serenity be wary of going over the reef if you venture out that far... first and foremost... fins and a vest are mandatory... I've never ventured out that far but I've always found that diving off a breaker reef can be a bit challenging for a weak or non swimmer...

I did a lot of snorkeling in April at the adult beach - I never got anywhere near the reef but still saw many awesome sites.

Sting Rays
Barracuda
Conch Shells
and a plethera of other fish

It was amazing!

Thanks for all your answers. I am not a strong swimmer, so would not feel comfortable being too far out and too deep (though I now fins and vest will be me out of too much trouble). I'd probably be a close-shore snoop.

Unlike my adventurous hubby, I will only go out to the plane wreckage at the adult beach when the water is shallow. But I have seen may neat sights staying relatively close to shore, including stingrays and even a little squid that squirted ink!
