Smoking Rooms?

Hi, odd question here.

We stayed at Boardwalk Villas last month, renting DVC points, and the smoking rooms were as far from the lobby as you can get. Someone on another thread had measured (it's that long) and came up with the length of 2 1/2 football fields (yes, we were in the infamous 2136, as well as in the next two rooms over)

We don't smoke, but my parents do. My mother is in a wheelchair, and my father has health problems (nothing to do with smoking, yes I know they should stop, but that's not what this thread is about). My question is this:

Is there any website that shows WHERE the smoking rooms are in DVC resorts? Or can you tell me where YOUR smoking room was, in relation to the elevators or the lobby (my dad always valet parks). The distance from the lobby and the elevators made it extremely difficult for my parents - they became so exhaused that they ended up spending Friday in their room, unable to come into the parks. To even get a cup of coffee was a huge ordeal. We would choose a resort the next time that was 'kinder'. Any ideas?

Thanks, and again, I know they shouldn't smoke, so I appreciate your thoughts in that regard, but that's not what this is about - it's about trying to assist a pair of really nice elderly people.

(and I have posted this on the Disney Resorts board, too, worded slightly differently)

Smoking rooms at OKW are buildings 12, 19 and 41... 12 is right by the Hospitality House, 19 is on Miller Road by the pool and 41 is by the Turtle Pond pool.

Smoking rooms at VWL are an entire floor (when I was there is was the entire 2nd floor so you could be close to the lobby or farther down the hall).

Don't know about the other DVC resorts though...

Are you sure that those 3 buildings are the ONLY smoking buildings for OKW? For a resort that large there should be at least a few more. When we were there last, I researched which buildings were smoking and asked if those were available and of course they weren't (don't get me started!). The number was more than 3 though. I know that they could have changed it or they are very slowly going to phase out smoking altogether since we visited in May but I think there might be more.

Does anyone else know for sure if there are more that 3 buildings available at OKW that let you smoke?

thanks

OKW does have only 3 smoking optional buildings- 12, 19 and 41. Here is a building report for OKW.

SSR has smoking optional villas in each building (and each floor has elevator access). BCV has smoking villas only on the 4th floor.

Be sure to make your requests when the reservation is made. If you want smoking, near an elevator- be sure to make the request. Requests are not guaranteed, but they do try to honor them.

Enjoy!

Positive sweetp267 I work at OKW ;):flower1:

Hey kcmiller - I was in room 2121 for a night, and my MIL was with us who can't walk very far either. We did get moved to a much closer room on the 1st level the next day. However the front desk let us use a wheelchair to get MIL to the lobby area. That may be an option next time. From what I understand the smoking rooms at BWV are far away from the lobby / elevators. I requested a smoking room and a room close to an elevator for MIL when we booked. Both rooms we got were non smoking. They just advised us to smoke on the balcony / patio. Not sure about the other dvc resorts though.

And it's been a steady decrease in the number of smoking units/buildings at OKW. I think there were at least 7 a few years ago and suspect the number was even high early on. HH has NO GV that are smoking and as also seen a decrease in the number of smoking units. I suspect BWV too has seen a decrease but don't know for certain.

There used to be more smoking buildings at OKW. I know 25 and 27 used to be smoking, but not anymore.

Check this website for BWV room reports:

http://members.aol.com/InstImpres/boardwalk.pdf

They list 2047/2049 as smoking and handicapped. That is boardwalk view, not sure if it is still smoking since I heard all boardwalk views are non-smoking. It does make sense that the smoking rooms are at the end of the hall, why should non-smokers walk down a hallway with smoking rifting out the doors.

Glad to know that they changed building 25 to non-smoking. We like staying in buildings 23-26. But we always avoided 25 because it was smoking. Now we can just request all 4 buildings.

KC,

A large number of smoking rooms at BWV are at the far end of the second floor (where you stayed). It is a block of 13 smoking rooms (preferred and standard views).

There are not that many other smoking rooms at the BWV resort and the availability is impacted by what size (studio, 1BR, etc.) and view (standard, preferred, boardwalk) room you are suppose to get. During high occupancy times, availability gets more difficult.

Depending upon your reservation, there may only be 1, 2, or 3 rooms that meet your requirements. But, I would think making a handicap smoking request would get you some priority.

There are two smoking handicap rooms located adjacent to the elevators on the second floor (lockoff 1BR with an adjoining studio).

Not to argue with LibertyBelle, but I don't think the entire 2nd floor at VWL is smoking anymore. All of what's left of the smoking rooms are on the 2nd floor, but I think some of those rooms are now non-smoking. If I had to guess, they probably left the rooms at the end of the hall smoking, and the ones closer to the elevator are probably non-smoking.

I might be completely wrong, but I'm sure I read somewhere recently that 12 was no longer a smoking optional building, now making just the two at OKW!!

Happy to be corrected on this.

You might have good luck being near the main elevator at BCV. The smoking rooms are on the 4th floor but not all the 4th floor. I know that all the rooms on the wing toward epcot are smoking. I believe that some rooms in the main hallway from the main elevators to the entrance of that wing are smoking as well (but I couldd be mistaken!)

I sure appreciate all these responses. Part of the problem, I'm sure, is that my mother NEVER requests a handicap room, because she must have a tub, she can't use a shower, and handicap rooms ordinarily have roll in showers. Next time, we'll know better what to ask for.

Thanks,

Not all handicapped rooms have roll in showers. There are different levels of handicapped rooms at most resorts. The fully wheelchair accessible ones are the ones with roll in showers. But they usually also have handicapped rooms that have raised seat toilets and tubs with grab bars.

Well no wonder it's soooooooo hard to get a smoking room!

Smoking rooms are so limited!!!

Time for smokers to make as much a fuss as the non-smokers!!

(Read other thread, For you smokers out there)

Maybe if Disney made more smoking rooms, we wouldn't have to hear about the rooms smelling of smoke!
We have requested smoking rooms at the 11 month window, only to be told when we get there that there are none available.
We are told we can smoke out on the balcony

So trying to be good and thoughtful, we go out on the balcony!!
Only to read about non-smokers complaining about us smoking outside!!!!
While non-smokers are complaining about this, have they thought or cared that we too are on vacation and want to enjoy it too?? We have gone out in the middle of the night, in the rain, cold (January) to accommodate the non-smoker.

Not EVERYONE has Asthma!

I work at OKW... I can assure you 12, 19 and 41 are the current smoking buildings...

ErinC I have not been at VWL in about 2 years (working anyway) so it would not surprise me if they changed the smoking rooms around. :)

Thanks for letting me know LibertyBelle. I don't know where I got that idea from - maybe I dreamt it!!

Hopefully, with three smoking buildings available, we'll have a reasonable chance of getting my auntie into one of them!!
