Smoking policy at Disney Parks

First off I want to be crystal clear I'am not a cigarette smoker however, I'am an occasional cigar smoker and I would never spark up one of my stogies up because I know cigars have a more pronounced smell over cigarettes.

The smoking policy at WDW needs to be enforced in some areas and less enforced in others. Smoking in lines should NOT be. Smoking in areas that are close to exterior dining areas should be frowned upon.

Now here comes the part where I might step on a few toes. If there is an area where smoking is allowed (which there aren't many of) please to the smoke sensitive people don't catch a holier than thou attitude because you the non-smoker are now in the smokers part of WDW. These sections are clearly marked so if you are smoke sensitive avoid these areas. Also please keep in mind that quite a few smokers congregate in these areas and smoke can waft over and wind can blow (mother nature can be fickle at times).

Now to the smokers who have no regard for people who sneak a smoke where they shouldn't be shame on you. It's people like you who make your smoking areas shrink and or disappear. So you smokers who get caught in the no smoking areas deserve whatever treatment you get and drop that attitude of I can smoke wherever I want it's a public space, thats where you are wrong once you come through those turnstyles you follow Disney's rules.

I hope this covers all angles. Flamming responses to my post will be promptly ingnored by me.

I applaud those who are courteous enough to use the designated smoking areas!!! I never complain about that. :D

:teeth: Larry.

And I am a non-smoker, but I wanted to say that I totally agree with all points that you have made. No flames from me to be ignored! ;)

And I, Larry, one who really hates being around smoke, also agree with all your points but one. One thing, you do say the smoking spots are clearly marked. I never have seen a sign (wished there was, or at least bigger) so more people would be aware they are around. Oftentimes, I see a person smoking, and I think they are in a non smoking area, until I see the smallish green butt receptacle. Good post, Larry.

While I, too, really hate cigarette smoke, I do agree with the points you make. One "heads up" here that I don't think would occur to many smokers. Occasionally, because of unusual circumstances (holiday crowds etc), some of the Disney characters are moved into smoking areas to do Meet and Greets. If you happen to be smoking and notice a Character nearby (either a face character or a fur character, it doesn't matter), it would be especially kind if you make sure your smoke doesn't drift his/her way. Some of the character CM's have breathing problems and they really shouldn't have to work in smoking areas--but believe me, it happens. The characters will be VERY grateful to you!!

Smoker checking in. ;) ALL good points Larry. I, as a smoker, was outraged when I saw smokers walking along their merry way in WDW in December, SMOKING! What's wrong with these people?? Do they smoke in Non-smoking sections of a restaurant? Do they smoke in a non-smoking home?? It really amazes me how rude some people can be. And, smoking in line?? Well, I NEVER thought that was considerate OR safe!

And, I agree with Dan about these areas NOT being marked better. I have a hard time finding what few spots there are but, I seek them out, sometimes my nose knows! ;)

And, MaryJo, trust me, if a character ever entered a smoking area I was in, I'd put that out so fast and, get in line for a pic!! :teeth:

I like to think I'm a considerate smoker (obedient about rules anyway) but, only the non-smokers around me could answer that.

Let me make myself clear on this. I DO NOT smoke in no-smoking areas. That means at Disney I try to find the smoking areas and BTW they are VERY poorly marked and if there is anyone like me who is "map-reading impaired," it is a problem. However, if I can legitimately smoke, I do. If, however, someone asks me to put it out, I will do so as graciously as I can, although it is hard for me to conceive that smoking outside causes anyone any distress, except in a very crowded situation. On the other hand, I get upset with the anti-smoking nazis like the guy who shouted at me through an open car window in Boston to put out the cigarette. I was smoking in my own car - seemed like he was really going overboard.

Many of us smokers would dearly love to quit. It is not easy. Others really enjoy a cigarette at certain times and don't want to give up that pleasure.

I was derided by others for smoking in an approved area at Seaworld and protesting the birds. (By the way, I did not see a SINGLE cigarette butt anywhere at Seaworld.) I like birds. I feed them in my own backyard. But they carry disease and they are horrible when they swarm over one's head. I love to sit and watch them in the yard where we are protected by a screened-in porch and besides "our" birds are not agressive. I feed squirrels as well (and a stray rabbit). BUT it is not fair to encourage birds to swarm around other people who are trying to eat. On another post somewhere someone said their aunt was bitten by a bird and developed an infection that had to be treated by anti-biotics. That's where the line ends.

22 years I believe......my biggest complaint about smokers at disney are when they walk around......if they walked with their butts high in the air and not down by little kids faces that would make me happier.....I have seen the areas where people are allowed to smoke and I think that is great.....they have seats and cigarettes disposals....I try not to look down on cigarette smokers .....cause I was there once and it was the hardest thing I ever did....was quit....kudos for your post .....

as a smoker, i agree! but i cant smoke at disney world because i wont smoke around my son. and i cant leave him to go to a designated smoking are.

Ah...wouldn't the world be a better place if people just "followed the rules". And what a shame it is, that the few inconsiderate give those who do follow the rules a bad name.
