Checked into a room at Pop Century with my cystic fibrosis/ allergic to smoke child. The room reeked of smoke. A air purifier was brought into our room. All bedding stripped. We could not switch rooms as none were available! I was not impressed. Housekeeping told me they were having problems with people smoking and the smoke travelling through vents in bathroom.

Third night at POP we came back to a even heavier smoke smell. My son couldn't even use the bathroom with coughing up a storm. I think the vents need to be fixed becasue you will never fix the ignorance of people whom are above rules and place people at risk by smoking were they are not suppose to smoke! This time the vent in the bathroom was blocked off and towel placed inside to stop the smoke. Then of course we had to deal with the smell of ****!!!!!. Was not impressed and I am probably not ever going back and please don't flame me for getting angry over the fact that people placed my already immune compromised child at risk and thought nothing of it!

I didn't sign up for that!

Did you ask to switch resorts? If the Pop couldn't accomodate you, maybe another resort would have. Did you explain to the manager that it was a health problem, and not just something you could deal with?

I must say yours is NOT the first post to complain about the smell of other smoking at the Pop. I think you should write to Disney and tell them what happened, and that the management does not seem to be cracking down on it. That is very disappointing.:sad2:

We did ask to change. We had a roll in shower room. All these were apparently full over New Years in the Value resorts. I did sent a letter off to Disney. I realize it isn't them that smoke, but they tell you all rooms are smoke free. The maintainence folks had a list of vent that had to be unhooked and stuffed with towel and then upon checkout they had to be undone and it was time consuming and frustrating. It was 11pm before they got to ours and we were beat tired...

They all acknowledge the problem, but are not finding a long term solution. One of these days someone is going to get very sick from this and then....

I think that if they couldn't get you a Value room that was as promised, they should have upgraded you. If smoke free is a medical necessity (if you forgive the fact that ALL rooms are supposed to be smoke-free) then they should have moved you to a room that was, regardless of what it would have cost them. For their solution to be having maintainace stuffing towels in your vent is totally unacceptable!

Sorry to hear about what happen to you and your son.No one should have to endure any of that nonsense. Not to disrespect anyone(I know I'll hit someones nerve)but you must understand that where you stay has alot to do with what kind of people will be around you.Lets face it where theres the cheap stay the trash will roam.So you could blame Disney all you want but it comes down to that Disney has to deal with the trash also (remember the customer is always right) that goes for the trash too.We save so we can stay at a moderate resort or better so to limit dealing with all the trash.Believe me I'm been there 10 times in 12 years I've seen the trash. We were there for xmas and after the electric light parade we walked up main street to find ourselves behind a couple smoking. The smoke going into my 2 yr old face(she was on my shoulders) when I finally said something to them and they responsed with its no big deal.Well just when I was about to put my daughter down and go at it my wife had to remind me that it was Dec.25 xmas and let it go.So some people just don't care and for the couple that I confronted you have been warned next time.........it won't be xmas.

Well said. I don't know that I would have said it but....:worship:

Is the smokers who abide by their own rules and think of no one but themselves!

Disney needs to crack down hard on those who break the rules. They should not only be fined but booted off Disney with no refunds of days remaining. Betcha that would deter smokers who break the rules. Heck some people would just pay the 250.00 fine to be able to smoke in their rooms.

That's ridiculous! I'm so sorry for that horrible experience. We're staying at the pop Feb 1st-7th and I just hope that our room won't be like that! I get really nauseous just by the smell of cigarette smoke, and I usually get a pretty bad headache as well.

Sorry you had to go through that....

If my child was that sensitive.....I would have demanded they
move me to another resort....on them.

Of course we all knew with no smoking rooms....that now we
won't know where people are smoking.....there is always a few
rulebreakers....just human nature:confused3

I'm checking into POP this Sat....my dd, 31, is traveling with me. She is on the road to being a nonsmoker, and is on meds for asthma..nebulizer and such. If I get put in a room that has any, ANY, smoke drifting into it, there is going to be an uproar. My dd has been through enough grief trying to beat this addiction and she doesn't need to have smoke wafting into our room via the air vents. No smoking is no smoking...no exceptions. I have always had a sensitivity to smoke (love Jellyrolls but can only stay for an hour or so with decongestants due to the smoke) but to have someone with severe asthma have to deal with secondhand smoke at a non-smoking resort is unbearable.
Oh, and by the way...trashy? I don't think so. I stay at POP all the time when I'm not at BWV!!! That's just plain nonsense to say that trashy people stay in the values because of the low rates. You wouldn't believe the behaviour I've seen at the deluxe resorts by those 'upper-class' folks.

I agree with you goofy4tink. We too will be checking in this weekend and I will also go straight to management if there are any smoking issues downwind. None of us are smokers, but I grew up with 2 and I will not pay for a smoky room. As far as I'm concerned, if they tell you about the hefty fines for smoking in rooms and non smoking areas, they should be investigating the smoking, and handing out the fines, not blocking vents and airing out rooms. The DSA's will fill up once a $250 fine hits someones bill!

Good luck to your daughter, it's tough. My mom's been "quitting" for 5 years, she still has a hard time. The health benefits are worth it though!

There were many rooms sharing one vent system. I thought they siad around 17 rooms and that they investigate but by the time they get to the offenders the air has cleared (so to speak) All of their smoke as been sucked through the vents and they have sprayed freshers....

They told me they needed to catch them at the time. However, when I complained the second time and ask for someone to come right over they said they couldn't as they were all on other jobs at the time....

They need to fix the vent problem. Housekeeping told me the same thing. They also need to fine people and kick them offsite! You fight, you get booted. You smoke and place another at risk and you are free to do it again:confused3 For some 250.00 is a convience fee to smoke in your room. You are only fined once!
