Smiles, Sand and Sunstroke!! A May 2012 Beach Club Trip of a Lifetime

I'm all caught up!
What an incredibly busy trip so far! You must have been exhausted. It's awesome that the crowd levels were low and you were able to get so much done.
Love the pictures of the Moose!

Amanda

We were a happy bunch! Can you tell that it is my DH and the mom from the other family that are related???? I think they look so much alike it that last picture. I'm sure she'd be thrilled to know I'm posting their pictures all over the internet. :lmao:

They really do look alike dont they:)
Its a flattering pic so I'm betting she wont mind:rotfl:

Dinner at Boma and DHS Evening EMH

Our reservation for Boma was coming up. None of us were terrifically happy to be heading out to our ADR without having a chance to clean up though. It had been a long, hot and sweaty day. We realized pretty quickly that my plans to come back to the BC, have some pool time, shower and hit Epcot for supper was really the way to go. We got the bus over, and we were such AKL virgins that we didn’t even know the difference between Kidani and Jambo House. LOL Anyway, when we arrived at Jambo House, DD’s mouth dropped open. She was in awe - she had the reaction I thought she would have to the Poly! It was a bit odd that we entered on the third floor and had to go down to the first for the restaurant. We hit the restaurant and got the buzzer. The kids and I headed out to check out the pool while we were waiting for our table. DD was falling more and more in love every second we were there. She is a huge animal lover, so this was right up her alley. While we were outside, it started to rain pretty heavily. The buzzer started going off, and we headed back inside.

Our server was awesome, and we were soon at the buffet, which was incredible. It was my favourite meal of the trip, by a country mile. There were loads of lentils, and African flavoured items, but nothing very bizarre or too spicy. I started with the peanut soup which I found to be flavourful and delicious, and moved on to a selection of delicious items. DD also said it was one of her favourite meal because of the mashed potatoes. Strange thing to love, but there you have it! There was nothing I tried that I didn’t like, and we loved the decor. The other DS couldn’t find anything that he wanted to eat, so the server got him chicken nuggets and fries from the other restaurant. Of course, when other diners saw that, they wanted those for their kids too! Our kids found lots to eat at the buffet, which was good. I think the other DD ate her weight in strawberries - at least four plates!
Here are some shots of us at the restaurant. I was too busy enjoying the meals to take pictures, sorry!

The dessert selection was incredible. The zebra domes on top of the vanilla sauce were a favourite, but the chocolate selections were also delicious:

After dinner, we went out to the savannah lookout - the giraffes were really close! Giraffes are my favourite... It was pouring rain out, but my kids were not deterred. They loved the outside fire pit, which was burning away merrily in the pouring rain. We saw zebras as well. Every animal we saw, DD’s resolve was solidified. She said that we HAD to stay there next trip. Blasphemy! LOL First Universal, now this!!! I told her that I would only consider a split stay with the BC. I mentioned it to DH, and he wasn’t that interested in AKL because of BC’s proximity to the two parks and the pool. I was surprised to have made a convert!

We got a taxi back to the BC, and most of our party were exhausted and looking forward to hitting the sack. However, despite the pouring rain which was continuing, DD wanted to hit DHS EMH and I was game. We donned our ponchos and headed to the boat dock, leaving DH and DS to an early (earlier?) night. There were a few other “hardcore” folks waiting, but the boat was basically empty. When we got there, the Studios also were close to empty - everyone was leaving because of the weather. So, we walked on to TOT and RRC and did Star Tours twice in a row, walking straight on each time. I have to say that riding TOT in the actual pouring rain and lightning was certainly an experience!!!

Here is our (bad, but what the heck!) PP picture from that night:

35387510067.jpg

After our second ride on Star Tours we went back to TOT for one last ride. The line was about 20 minutes. We finally made it to the spot in front of the elevators and were just about to board and they said there was a problem and none of the elevators were running. We decided to wait and waited another 10-15 minutes or so. They were evacuating people who didn’t want to wait through another elevator, which I thought was kind of funny. LOL After 15 minutes or so, a CM came through and said that they were evacuating the whole building. As we were leaving, they gave us two FPs for the ride for anytime until May 15th, which was nice.

We headed out for an ice cream, then meandered back to the BC. By the time we got back, DD was exhausted. We collapsed into bed and DD was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Another great day in Disney!

Next up: Future World (for most of us) and Biergarten!

What a great day at AK you all had along with HS! I give you :cheer2: for tackling all that you did. I'm not sure I could do it. I'll let you know how I did in a few days when we head to WDW! We had breakfast at Boma a few years back and it was also delicious. I believe one of the best on site but that's just me. Seems as if you're raising your children right as they love Disney as much as you!!!! :cool1: We have an adr at Biergarten next week also so I can't wait for your thoughts on that. Thanks for sharing your great trip! Looking forward to more!!!!!!

Love that your daughter was up for EMH in the rain, but I'm just shaking my head that she is putting AKL in front of the BC. Really, doesn't she know you are a BC family?

(Although I've visited AKL and get how special it is)

Sounds like a terrific dinner. And I am with your DD, just love AKL. The animals, the lobby :thumbsup2 We have stayed at several deluxe resorts and AKL is my second choice of resort (of course Y&BC is #1). Maybe try a split stay? We have done this and enjoyed the close proximity to AK and BB. Also, think the bus ride to MK is about the same as from Y&BC.

Glad that you enjoyed your dinner so much. I have a major curry aversion so I've been afraid to eat at Boma.
I love how people disappear when it rains. One of our most successful days at MK was a rainy day. We walked on to everything!

Amanda

I would love to try AK Lodge too but it is so far away from everything. I suggested to my husband a split stay with just one or two nights at AK lodge but he has no interest in split stays and it would take alot for me to convince him to stay anywhere other than BC. I have some time to figure it all out since we still have our current trip in September before I start planning our next trip! :lmao:

Looks like you had another fun and successful day! :thumbsup2

Oh Oh your DD has fallen in love with AKL. I understand why though. Seeing those animals grazing right outside the resort is amazing.

Boma is my absolute favorite also. I also think it is a favorite of DH & DS's as well.

Wow you & DD had lots of energy to go to DHS in the rain. But great that the lines were low & you rode my favorites.:thumbsup2

I had no idea that I would be up for all I did, and that DD would be so enthusiastic. Last trip she was 8, and I was way more commando, and she understandably found it exhausting. DS was still up for anything that trip. Neither kid was crawling out of their skin to go, probably because of the extreme heat in August and my dawn to dusk touring style, not to mention that their two favorite rides were closed during our visit (BTMR and TT). I reformed for this trip and although we didn't accomplish EVERYTHING it was a way better vacation, which is all that matters! And although none of us appears fit I'm sure, we can all walk until our feet fall off, and the miles and miles required for Disney didn't seem to be a problem for us at all this trip. The kids have been talking about going back since we came home and I'm plotting and scheming for 2014! Even DH says he would happily go back.

I KNOW Janet!! First Universal and now this! What's a BC Disney girl to do???? :lmao:

Good to know about the MK bus! :thumbsup2. We will have lots new to explore in MK when we go back with the expansion. I'm planning a split stay, with 3 nights maybe at AKL and then moving back to the BC. I don't feel like I got enough WS or pool time this trip... And I forgot BB was close - we have never been there.

Glad that you enjoyed your dinner so much. I have a major curry aversion so I've been afraid to eat at Boma.

I don't recall there being a lot of curry at Boma. There was a roast beef station, and the heavenly mashed potatoes, and some African dishes, but I didn't think there was a lot of curry. You should give it a try! And ITA that rain can be a big opportunity. We have some fairly wretched weather here so our family is pretty tough with everything but heat...

I would love to try AK Lodge too but it is so far away from everything. I suggested to my husband a split stay with just one or two nights at AK lodge but he has no interest in split stays and it would take alot for me to convince him to stay anywhere other than BC. DH loved Boma and the look of AKL and I'm sure if I offer to pack he will be ok with a split stay. :rotfl2:

I could not believe DD this trip. Seriously the only thing that slowed her down were her feet being blistered or her shoes chaffing against her TL road rash. She was a trooper. And up to this point, DS was also game for everything and totally easy to get along with. However, we did hit a wall the next day! I haven't written that part out but it's coming!

Feckless~your TR is great!
Been lurking as I do not post very much, but I am so enjoying your pics and stories! Thank you!:goodvibes

PS, you know now, there's got to be a mother/daughter trip to the AKL in the future. LOL ;)

I don't think DS would stand for that!!

Thanks for lurking and sharing our trip.

Day 8 - Epcot morning, but not for all!

First, big apologies! I realized when I started this TR that I had NO pictures of our Epcot morning! What the heck is wrong with me???? LOL It is my first trip report, so I promise to do better next time. :lmao:

After a late night, we didn’t rush to get up in the morning. We had made a plan to head to Epcot the next morning with the other family for a few hours to catch the attractions in Futureworld. Since we had already experienced Soarin’, and Test Track was closed, we weren’t in a rush. The other dad wanted to go by boat for a change (I think he may have thought that it would take us to FW), so we headed for the boat dock. When we got up in the morning, I had noticed that DS had gotten a bit of sun on his face. DS was nervous about putting sunblock on his sunburn, as he said the spray stung when it wasn’t burned. He asked if we could put it on outside, and unfortunately, instead of me putting lotion on his face, I put the stupid spray on and it stung like the dickens. Plus, the minute we got outside, the heat hit us hard. It was about 95 degrees, and this was about 10:30 a.m. DS pulled up, and said that he didn’t want to go to the park feeling like he was feeling, and that he wanted to spend the day in the pool. DD (shocker!) wanted to go go go... DH said that he would stay back with DS, and maybe join us a bit later. DS went right into the pool, and DH got to relax by SAB. This is why staying onsite rocks - even though DS didn’t want to go around the parks, it didn't affect everyone else.

We walked through the International Gateway, and ended up at Innoventions first. We had no plan, which was a bit of a shock to the system for me. :lmao: We went in to do the Tornado ride first, but there was a long wait so we moved on to Sum of All Thrills. Unfortunately, the DD from the other family didn’t have her sneakers on today, so she was a hair short for the ride. The other dad was NOT impressed with the CM (although I didn’t think it was bad) because when he commented that she passed the same height requirement yesterday with different shoes on, she said, “Oh, she had her stilettos on, right?” He felt like she was being a bit snarky! The other DS was going to line up and ride with us, but he decided to go with his family so it was just DD and I. We got our cards, and set up the fastest and most loop-de-loop roller coaster we could. We should have chose the jet plane option because it was a bit more exciting I think! We enjoyed it, but it wasn’t really worth the 20+ minute wait.

We caught up with the other family, and headed towards Mission Space. We stopped to enjoy the guys beating on the garbage cans - they were excellent. Unfortunately it was WAY too hot to stay out and watch for long, so we were soon underway. DD and I were determined to try Mission Space on Orange and we convinced the other family to join us. The other dad has terrible motion sickness so it was out for him, but the other mom came along. I couldn’t believe the number of warnings we got - shocking! LOL Anyway, we really enjoyed it and I didn’t get sick at all, which surprised me.

When we left the ride, we found the other dad in the Control Room area just outside the ride. He was completely absorbed with the computer game that you do there. We took over the support computers behind him and his newly discovered group, and tried to figure out what we were doing. Unfortunately, we sucked, so their group lost right when we finally figured out what we were doing. We decided that we would the kids and I would form our own group, while the other parents were support. It was a scream and we ended up kicking the butts of the other group, even though they had a ton more people helping them. It was actually a really fun time, and we were happy that we had stopped.

After that, we headed for Ellen’s Energy Adventure. Once we got there, the other family were overcome with the heat, and tired, so they headed back. Not near enough time for us in the parks, so we stayed and went on the ride. They warned us as soon as we got in there that it was about 45 minutes, and gave us a couple of chances to back out! LOL DD and I actually enjoyed this ride. Very relaxing and we love Ellen.

Once we left here, we headed for Club Cool. At some point we saw the TT singers. Definitely worth missing TT for. LMAO!! Anyway, we tried every cola, including the Beverley. There was a guy there who was just drinking glass after glass of the stuff! Bizarre. Our favourite was the watermelon one from China.

We wandered over to the butterfly tent that they had set up for the Flower and Garden Festival, which was cute but in the heat of the day it was UNBEARABLE. LOL No butterflies alighted on us, but we saw some escapees outside which was nice.

We decided to have lunch at Sunshine Seasons before we went back. DD had mac and cheese (I thought the kids mac and cheese was gross, and so did DS, but DD seemed to like it) and jello and a Mickey whoopie pie. I had noodles, which were yummy. It was all about dessert though. I had an apple crumble muffin-like dessert (don’t remember the name). YUM!

After lunch we headed back to the BC. DS was still in the pool. When I saw him, I was shocked. He had been in the pool since we left, and obviously he had waaaay too much sun. His rash guard had ridden up on his back and there was a foot high strip of red skin on his back above his waistband. Ouch!!! I got him out of the pool and into the room right away. DH had reapplied sunblock during the day but it was a long one, and DS had already had too much sun the day before...

We got ready to head out - we were all looking forward to heading back out to WS and to Biergarten. We met up with the other family and because it was still so hot we decided to go out the secret entrance - there is a door by room 1501 of the BC that is super close to the International Gateway, so although it isn’t shorter, you can maximize your inside AC time on the walk. The other family was impressed - one more thing that I learned from the DIS! I heard DS say, "If you see the fish lamps, you know you are going the right way!" LMAO (There are a pair of cool fish lamps on a table on the way to the secret entrance - another tip learned here!)

Soon we were in Germany, and were given our usual pager. We headed out to the shops - I was a bit nervous in the crystal shop with all the kids!!! DS decided to try his luck with a tiara:

DSC00423.jpg

Soon we were seated! We were happy to find that we were all seated at one table, as apparently we are antisocial. Here we are: you can really see that DS had gotten WAY too much sun, but he was happy.

DSC00425.jpg

Our server was Philip, and I loved all the German accents and the ambiance. It really felt a bit like we were somewhere in Germany (which was the point, of course!! LOL) We all found something yummy at the buffet. The sausages were of course a highlight, especially for the kids. DH and I ordered the three beer samplers, and I really liked them all. Strangely, I liked the dark beer the best, even though I don’t normally like darker beer.

Soon, the oompah band started. We all really enjoyed it, as you can see here!

We had a great view of the show:

Here are some pics of the happy family!

Philip our server was lovely, and kept refilling the kids’ drinks. DS had a huge beer stein of chocolate milk, and it kept getting refilled. The other dad was joking around, and got DS to chug one of them. Then DS accidentally knocked over one of the huge glasses of milk into the aisle where people were walking to get their food. Unfortunately, it took a pretty long time for them to come and clean it up although we asked everyone we saw to please get a mop. We threw all our napkins on the floor, and spent about 15 minutes telling customers and servers to be careful. It was a bit of a pain!

DD wanted to head to Norway to ride Maelstrom again, but unfortunately, we had taken our time and enjoyed our evening, so there was no way we could make it in time. We stopped and watch Illuminations for the third time, and then headed back to the room. We had planned one last DHS morning the next day, so we wanted to get an early start. Maybe even make it in time for TSM????

Next up: The sun claims a victim...

Sounds like a great evening, following a great day of going with the flow. Love the picture of you!

It does look like your son had too much sun (and chocolate milk :) ), which from what you've said so far will result in the next updates having some bad news.

I loved Biergarten, but it wasn't my son or husband's favourite.

I like that you watched illuminations 3 times. We have always made a point of seeing it on our previous trips, but on this trip we didn't manage to see it once.

Wow.....took be a bit to catch up on the last few installments but now I am all up to date.

So good to hear you all enjoyed the Dark Side. We traveled there one year and my family didn't enjoy it too much! All day they kept comparing everything to Disney. This made me smile because I have been trying my best to pass on the "nothing beats Disney" mentality!! :rotfl2:

Your day at AK sounded great too!! I have never tried Boma and do not have them in my ADRs for our next trip so I might have to add it for our Halloween or Christmas trip.

Epcot is one of our favorite parks (and one of the many reasons we are huge BC fans)! Your poor son's sunburn looks painful! It can happen so quickly at the World.....there is just so much going on it's hard to keep track of sunscreen.

The next installment sounds like it will not be a highlight of the trip.....

Sounds like DD has all the makings of a good commando-style Disney fan! You should be proud! :lmao:
Summer heat is really something down there in Florida.

Amanda

Well, almost all of the "watchings" of Illuminations were done with my head turned to the right while walking. Commando style :lmao:

Yes, there was a nasty next day coming right up!!! ;)

Nope, not a highlight... Boma will be a highlight for you for sure.

DD loved the thrill rides so Universal offered more of those, but she still loved Disney too!

Thanks for following along. Yes, she was anti-commando on our last trip, but on this trip I was running after her! :)

Feckless:

OMG, your son looks like he's in heaven in those pictures!!!! I know what's coming so I'll keep my mouth shut. Still, I'm willing to bet this trip to Biergarten will stay in his memory for years to come. So I guess it's worth it. Sorry about the spill.

Biergarten is on my ADR list and JanetMom just went there on her trip report also. It just looks like so much fun!

Even though I know what's coming... looking forward to your next installment.

Day 9 - It’s the SUNSTROKE part of the story!

Today was supposed to be our DHS day on my initial plans, but because it was so easy to get back and forth to the Studios from BC, we had been a few times already (thank God, as it turned out). I had an ADR for us all to go to Sci Fi Cafe, for lunch at 12:45, which was the kids’ request. Next time, I think I will focus on having dinner ADRs because we enjoyed them so much more. We had two breakfast and one lunch ADR and we were looking for the evening ADR on all three of those days.

Because of the lunch ADR, I got up early and hit the lounge for breakfast. I was hoping to make it for rope drop, or at least get there in time to get a FP for TSM. When I came back from the lounge to check on the kids, DS started complaining that his stomach hurt, and that his sunburn was really bothering him. When school isn’t involved, DS’s stomach never hurts! LOL We weren’t sure what was going on with him, but we quickly found out it was something more serious when he started throwing up. Pretty much chocolate milk (TMI!!!). Poor kiddo! DH was quick thinking and I can advise that there is another use for the Hurricane Hannah’s green buckets. However, despite DH being very quick on our feet, he did throw up on the carpet a bit. We cleaned it up as best we could, all while DS was having an unpleasant time of it, to say the least. I went out to concierge and asked them to send up housekeeping as soon as possible, and they assured me that they would.

However, according to DH, they didn't show up for at least an hour or two, which I was surprised about. DH actually had to call a couple of more times before housekeeping came. I have to say, though, every other request we made this trip, they came up right away. Another robe? We got one in less than two minutes, same with the request we made for shampoo. I guess they needed to arrange the carpet cleaning, but nobody explained it to us. Once they came, they had some fairly heavy equipment, and it was very noisy and intrusive, as you might imagine. It took an hour or so to clean the room. DH didn’t know where to take DS, as there was no way they could stay in the room, so they went into the Club Lounge. DS was so miserable, that he laid his head on the table and fell asleep.

No pictures. Aren’t you happy????

We decided that there was no need for us all to stay in the hotel room (love onsite. LOVE.) and DH was awesome and offered to again stay back with DS for the second day in a row. He knew that I was the crazy Disney freak, so he took another one for the team and I sure love him for it! DD and I didn’t wait for the other family, because they were slow getting going.

Unfortunately, by this point we were well out from rope drop so I knew that TSM was out of the picture! However, I was just happy to be going (but worried and sad about DS).

DD and I went straight to Rockin’ Roller Coaster. It was walk-on again, which was awesome. DD was pretty cool about it by this time. I actually bought the ride photo (amazing! I was doing the redneck version all the time but I thought I’d get this one):

34955570000.jpg

After RRC, we headed back for ride #3 for Tower of Terror. There was no line so no need to use our FPs that we got the night the ride broke down. It was even more fun the third time! I now wish I bought the t-shirt. LOL That and the AK hat with the camo and the sparkle. LOL Here are some of our PP pictures heading for TOT:

Here's our redneck ride photo - see us in the back???? LOL

After that, it was pretty close to the time for our ADR, so we headed over to Sci Fi Cafe. Of course, I managed to get lost (DUH!) and the only CM in sight couldn’t tell us where it was! Managed to get there right when the skies opened up into a downpour. Finally the other family ran in, quite late a bit wet. LOL We were seated pretty quickly, which given how late we were, worked out great. We got to sit in a car for 6 which was nice. The other dad and I sat together, and had a great laugh. DD ordered the picnic burger which is a hamburger with a hotdog on top of it. Imagine. I had the regular burger which was delicious. We knew it was time to leave when the movie scenes started to repeat. ;)

After lunch, we headed for the Muppets. I remember being amazed by the Muppets in 2009, but we see so many movies in 3D now that it is a bit "blah". Still liked it though! After that, we did the Great Movie Ride, which was also fun, but not a highlight. Were the parts with the CMs a late added element? It didn’t seem to really fit...

After that, we walked around the streets of America and got some great PP pictures!

35387510083.jpg

35387510090.jpg

Here we all are with Mickey. Nice of him to stop by!

35387510097.jpg

Came back and DS was sleeping. I had gotten him two movies to keep him going while DD and I were gone but National Treasure 2 was in Spanish. French is OK, but only DH speaks Spanish. :lmao: Unfortunately that meant that DH was forced to watch Freaky Friday. Poor guy!!! Ha ha ha He only threw up once, but had diarrhea most of the morning.

DD and I ended up ordering room service, which was good, and arrived at the door in about 20 minutes. It looked very similar to the meals we had at the Captain’s Grille. I woke DS up at 6 p.m., and he was not in too bad a mood. He and DD started watching the Simpsons on the iPad which helped his mood! I felt so bad about DH missing so much, I sent him out to explore Epcot on his own.

DS was sorry about missing out on his last day at his favourite park, but I didn’t think he was up for much. I suggested a short trip to Downtown Disney to go to the Lego Store. He hadn’t felt sick since about noon, so he wanted to go.

I was fairly stressed about the possibility of DS having a contagious gastro bug, but I thought that it was likely that it was sunstroke, given the amount of sun he got in the previous two days. This was only the third or fourth time in his 9 years that DS had thrown up (like, total.) I was concerned that if this was contagious, we would really be in trouble. DD is actually very susceptible to stomach sicknesses and was sick so much when she was in 3rd and 4th grade that we had a full barrage of tests done (all negative). DS never gets sick. He even slept in bed with DH and I when we had Norwalk and he didn't get it.

Once DH got back from Epcot, DS decided he was up for the trip. When we went out to catch the bus, DS was completely disoriented and thought it was the following day. He hasn’t slept during the day since he was a toddler and was completely freaked that it was dark out after he was asleep! First stop Lego store, and had a pleasant surprise - since I ordered all the Xmas Lego for my office I had a $40 credit on my VIP account! I didn't even have my card! DS loved the build a mini figure station:

After this we headed to World of Disney. I loved this store! DS got a fabulous Perry the Platypus shirt, and DS found the Grumpy baseball shirt he was looking for. The store is so huge...

Then we headed for Once Upon a Toy. After that, DS was exhausted, so he and DH headed back, and DD and I went to the Xmas store, and Design a Tee. DD designed a really cute Mickey shirt, and was desperate to have it, but it wouldn’t be ready until the next morning and resort delivery would take two days. I wasn’t thrilled about having to head back, but we went ahead and ordered it. We had our first rude guest experience here - there was one line for three stations, and we were all told to wait for the next available CM. Soon, I was next in line. However, a man came in, saw that a CM was available (I was just moving over to him) and just walked up. When I told him that I was next in line, he argued with me and said I was lined up for the middle CM. Yes, we are all lined up for one CM. Duh. He was very angry, which was a little weird!!! LOL

On the way back, an idiot jumped the line for the bus, which was the second rude guest experience. However, another family and I bonded in complaining about their rudeness so it wasn’t all bad!

Next up: Magic Kingdom EMH - was it solo? Family? Or did we miss it altogether? Tune in for the last full day report with a couple of surprises...
