Don't laugh! Someone mentioned the strong animal smell while staying at Animal Kingdom. Has anyone else noticed this? We are waiting for our packet of info on DVC and were taking that into consideration. Please let me know! Thanks!:confused3

Smell??? The only thing I have ever smelled there is the cooking from the restaurants! No, I have never noticed an animal smell!

I agree with Diane. I've stayed there several times and never noticed any animal smell. There is a crew out cleaning the savannas every day.

We have stayed there several times and have never noticed a smell. In fact we just returned last night from a week and were talking about how someone complained about it and we were wondering where they could haver possibly smelled anything bad, this resort is clean and beautiful.

The only thing I smelled was curry and wood burning. It smelled great.

They keep the Savanna's so clean, you will be amazed. I have never noticed a animal smell and have even commented about it. :)

no smell noticed here at all. Well, except for the food cooking downstairs.

NEVER noticed any animal smell.

There IS a distinct odor in the lobby...but it's a pleasant one (IMHO). It's cardamon, cinnamon, burning wood....just a bunch of wonderful odors all mixed together. It's funny...when I think of the lodge, that "smell" is the thing I associate with it.....I just LOVE it.

We did not notice any smell at all when we stayed there in August. It was very hot and humid, too.....the perfect combo for a "strong animal smell" to hang in the air if there was one. Just curious.....did someone you know tell you about "the smell" or did you read it on one of the boards??

I think they just forgot to put deodorant on that morning. It probably wasnt the AKL animals they were smelling..........

There have been other threads about Disney pumping in odors or smellamagic to the other resorts. Maybe they pump in AK odors for the AKL & AKVs. :lmao:

I'll be the party-pooper here (no pun intended--seriously).

DH and I went to visit AKL about four years ago (the resort was new) to see if it was somewhere we'd like to stay. We took a bus over there from AK on our way back to our resort.

The lobby didn't smell that bad. We smelled the cooking, etc. But as we headed down a hall (trying to get outside to view the animals--we got lost) we ended up headed towards some rooms. The STINK of the place about knocked us over. It was foul! It smelt like an unkempt zoo.

However, that was four years ago. From what I can tell from folks that actaully stayed there recently, it's no longer a problem. Besides, I can't imagine that Disney would allow it to stay that way for long.

I may be in the minority here but I like the smell of the AKL lobby so much that I would pay good $ for a bottle of it! I'm thinking aftershave (I mean, they sell musk-scent.....WTH is musk? Male deer gland, yuck!).

If course, I would get hungry every time I wore it........

They could follow this up with a line of "Boma Mustard" themed colognes......

The possibilities are endless......

(Note to self: buy "Introduction to Marketing 101" and read......)

We first stayed at AKL in 2004 and have been there at least once, sometimes more, each year. No smell anywhere other than neat the restaurants and that's a very good smell.

2 years ago DH and I stayed in the concierge's deluxe room and our room had a terrible smell of mildew. Not animal poo, mildew. It made me sick and I hated it. No other room available like ours. They did everything humanly imaginable except tear it down and still I smelled mildew. They were able to offer us another room but it did not have a view of much but the overhang. It did not have an odor at all. So, indeed it was that room only and going into it just made me ill. So I sat in the concierge lounge alot.

This does seem to be fairly common in the south.
I travel for a living, and spend upwards of 144 nights/year in hotels (not including Disney hotels).
Mildew and mold smells are gross, and it's probably related to the high moisture in the south.
I've also had a bad mildew/mold smelling room at the Poly. :smokin:

Thank goodness I am not alone. This was just an awful smell, pungent. My husband thought I was nuts...but I am allergic to mold and it was terrible. It made our stay of 7 nights very unpleasant in a very expensive trip. Oh well. I am going back in Feb to stay in a one bedroom in the concierge level. Hope I don't have that awful small again. I love the small of the lobby and the food but this rancid smell of mildew was a killer

You know, if you really examined it, I expect there is just as much animal waste from native wildlife like squirrels, rabbits, birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons, otters, etc. around each of the Disney resorts as there is around AKL from the animals on the savanna. Yet people never complain of animal smells at other resorts. I don't think the smell has anything to do with animals, but with mildew, if such problems still exist.
